My amp gauge doesn't work. At least I hope that is it. Can I check the output of the alternator without pulling up the floor and hooking clamps to the battery's? Battery's seem a little low. I have no strength in my left arm. And with a factory cab it is hard to get in there and lift the carpet, rubber mat, and steel floor panel. Thanks guys.

Check it at the starter battery cable connection.

Tom, did your ammeter use to work ? If it quit, it could be the ammeter or the regulator under the dash cover... As doc said check at post on starter and if it's 13.6 volts, it is working...

Put batteries in my 190XT about 12 years ago, it started slow the last time I ran it... and the next time it was no go... pulled out the batteries and put a charger to them and each battery now only registers 10 volts ... Guess it is time for some new batteries for it... but this late, I will wait for next spring and for now use some car batteries. LOL

If Amp gauge is burned up, alt could be working and not get to battery because of Amp gauge. MACK

Normal charging range is 13.9-14.5V in any 12V system. As Mack mentioned, put a Voltmeter at the output lug at the rear of the Alternator. Put your ground to the case or if it has a grounding lug, put it there. See what your output is at about 650 rpm. Should be 13.9 or better. (14.2 being ideal) Anything above 14.5 is an overcharging issue.

The Ammeter is a flow meter. Needs current to run through it to tell you something. If the Ammeter failed, no current will run through it to make it read.

Usually,if the amp meter shows discharge when cranking the engine, using the preheater,or have the lights on,it means that the gauge is good. If the gauge never moves when a load is applied,then it is probably bad. If the alternator is charging,the rear of the alternator will become magnetized at the rear bearing area. Test that with a small screw driver or knife blade. The DN style alternator can be full fielded by running a small jumper wire from the field terminal on the back to the hot (positive) terminal. Only do this briefly as it eliminates the regulator and makes the alternator charge wide open. It should peg the gauge if the alternator is working. This helps to determine if the alternator is the problem or if it's the regulator or a wiring issue.

The heavy cable at the starter solenoid goes straight to the battery. Not only can you check it from there you can hook your battery charger there and charge the batteries back up. My 190 has an early cab on it so you can't remove the steel floor plate unless the door is closed. It swings in onto of the panel so I have to either get inside the cab and remove the floor while standing on my head or pull the door. Last time I pulled the door I greased athe hinge pin excessively and spun it with a drill now that's my favorite way to get to it
