I just put an aftermarket radiator in a D-14. The shroud had a diamond opening, and the fan blades hit. The original had a round opening, so I just cut it out like the original. The fan blades now clear a good 1/8 to 1/4 inch everywhere.

However, about every minute when running you hear a noise like something rattling. It is literally for a second then not for a minute or so, but its consistent in that it repeats every so often.

I don’t see any signs on the fan blades or radiator that its hitting, but the sound like something isn’t clearing with the rattle worries me.

Are there any ideas what the rattle could be? I have thought something is loose, but I have checked all the bolts and don’t see anything.

I did notice the overflow tube seems to be very close to the opening for neck of the radiator. I am thinking to put a piece of rubber there to eliminate that as a possible source of the rattle tomorrow.

I put a new water pump, alternator, thermostat and hoses on while I had the front cowls off for the radiator replacement. The rattle just worries me because it don't know what it is.

When the radiator on my D-15 went bad. I had it re-cored. However, the local radiator shop went out of business several years ago. All the new radiators in trucks are aluminum with plastic tanks, so you don't need a repair man. You have to replace instead of fix. That means dealing with modifying new parts.

I know little things can get you. When my 14 wouldn't idle right all that was wrong was the bolt securing the manifold was almost rusted in to. I changed the manifold bolts hooked the spring to the new bolt and problem solved. I hope the rattle is the overflow tube. I can't figure what it is. I was hoping the vast knowledge on the forum might have an idea.
