A co-worker of mine just bought a '18 Ford F150 club cab 4x4 truck. I rode with him from one job site to another and commented on it's rough idling at stop lights. He informed me that the engine shuts down at stops. I am just curious as to what the life span of a starter/labor replacement will be vrs. "mpg" savings Wacko

Could it just shut down half the cylinders instead of the whole engine as it going from an 8 cylinder to a 4 banger?

3.5 Liter EcoBoost Engine - 2018 FORD

https://i2.wp.com/www.ford-trucks.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/2018-ford-f-150-3.5-liter-ecoboost-engine-2.jpg?ssl=1" rel="nofollow -

Advanced twin independent variable cam timing (Ti-VCT) precisely opens and closes valves to optimize power output. This happens at every point across the performance band due to finely tuned software. EcoBoost combines two proven powertrain technologies used in heavy-duty trucks: twin turbochargers and direct injections.

This engine delivers peak torque at low engine speeds, and across a wide rpm band to provide power on demand. Such capabilities pay off during hauling and towing applications. Lastly, deceleration fuel shutoff is precisely managed to increase fuel economy.  ????

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

they use enhanced starter that is very different form the old starter. and the fuel injection system is altered so it can start the timing sequence from the first cylinder to reach TDC  the starters use needle bearings instead of oil impregenated bushings are geared to turn slower and still keep the engine rotation speed the same and have a decouple built into it so it stars rotation with less load and disengages faster so the starter doesn't have to wait for the engine to over speed the Bendix before it can start coast down.

Bet you won't replace that starter for $69.95.

So since most of an engines wear happens at startup........what will that mean down the road?

WTH is an "advanced starter" ??!! Sounds VERY expensive to me LOL!! Can't reply on thr 4 jugs dropping out at highway speeds, just know that it shuts off at stoplights and NOT very smoothly IMO. Is  the starter/replacement labor(after warranty) worth the "fuel savings" ??  Going to go out on a limb and say NO!!!!

a lady that works with my old lady...oooops...I mean my loving wife, drives a Range Rover, and the engine stops running when she stops...like at a stop light, then it starts when she pushes on the gas pedal. kinda like a golf cart setup. supposed to save gas I guess?

The wife's new Equinox does that too. Kind of a weird feeling at the stop light knowing the motor's not running. Tach needle goes to Auto Stop position and as soon as you let your foot off the brake or touch the gas it's running again. I doesn't do it every time either, just when all the stars and the moon line up I guess. I don't really like it but am getting used to it.

My wife's 2017 Escape does that, when you take your foot off the brake it starts. It does have a override button you can push

Jeep has the same ting on it but has override button , I use that if in city but it resets to auto position if key is turned off .
Another way is when you stop / hold brake - take foot off brake and reapply - engine stays running as this overrides auto start killing engine

Not too worried about start up wear, as I don't think the oil is going to drain back in that short amount of time.  Starter longevity and cost is definitely a valid concern though!

Any idea of how "accessible" the starter is to get to? How much labor $$/ time is involved with removing GOD ONLY KNOWS WHAT that the engineers put in the way of what "used to be" a simple fix?? Have heard horror stories about Cadillac engine starter replacement (North Star) Ouch

FREEDGUY  estimated average labor cost around here is $75 to $96 according to Repair Pal. Your mileage may vary.
