My dad has an AC 185 that has had the PTO clutch break go out and we both have no idea what to do but we would really like to try to make the fix ourselves if we can. The biggest issue is that we don't know where it is and what it looks like...I've been able to read some other posts and have a really good idea what it will look like but if anyone can help us figure it out that would be wonderful. I tried looking on YouTube for some videos that could help with no luck. I'm assuming a break pad will need replacing as the pistons would seem to be less likely the cause based on what I've read so far. Any thoughts??

You can look at the parts breakdown in agcopartsbook.com The piston can be removed from the front of the pto drive housing without removing the housing, It is spring loaded. You might check to make sure the valve is shifting enough to actuate the brake.

Tractors with the 540/1000 PTO clutch had more issues with the brake than straight 540 units.  There was a change made to the round brake pucks to make them more aggressive to help keep the PTO from creeping in cold weather. When I install new pucks I leave out the return springs and replace them with a pipe spacer as long as the spring is when fully collapsed. This insures that if the puck ever comes off, the piston can't eat into the clutch housing. Leaving out the springs helps make more brake squeeze pressure.

Warped plates can also be the cause of break not working.      MACK

Does the 185’s w540/1000 hydraulic PTO have a factory designed “neutral” like the 200? I have always just ran them in or out and that seems hard on the brake with an implement needing them repaired continually. I have seen others post for this repair as well. Sorry if I interrupted this thread.

Yes, there is a neutral and some machines should be allowed to coast to a stop before applying the brake.
