Well Lookin like ole Shameless is just gonna have to chew my azz out again as I come dragggin home yet another Ford,,,jimminy,,,,,
I seen this 1992 Extended Cab with a 4.0 5 speed with 4X4.  the guy says "Not Runnin" and wants $1000, I wait and a few days later the price is $750, then down to $500 and when it gets to $300 I message him and he tells me come look and bring a trailer. I ease up to the Alien Town and it don't look too bad,,,nuttin a wash rag and a bucket of water won't fix,,,,He tells me his friend GAVE it to him as he could not get it runnin after 3 weeks of tryin. After we get it loaded on trailer he tells me since his friend GAVE it to him,,,he is gonna GIVE it to me as well,,,,I'm impressed,,!!
He tells me it will not crank at all and after getting it home I find the cable from battery to starter is bad plus the brushes are shot in the starter. After fixin these 2 things it will now crank but NO Start. The engine spins free  like no compression so I pull plugs and engine has NO Compression at all,,!!!
I'm told by a dude on The Ranger Station Forum that the 4.0 is a non-interference engine so no valves should of hit the pistons to explain the no compression issue .
I figure timing chain broke but doesn't explain the no compression sitiation????
 Any takers,,,

It sat a while then someone started it and the valves stuck from the crappy gas we get today. Pull the valve covers and give it a look. Belt or timing chain??? No cam movement no compression.
Crank it over and watch the rotor.

im with Thad... if the pistons are going up and down, and the valves are not opening or closing, then you will not get any compression.

LOLLOL,,,Well,,Ya'll see,,I was in a hurry to post and haul azz 'fore ole Shameless started pokin me bout this Ranger ,,so I didn't get to do a Paul Harvey and do a "Rest Of The Story",,,,,LOLLOL thet Shameless,,,he gots sharp words agin them poor Fords,,,,,
Anyway,,the original owner,,,trk is low mileage at 81,250,,he was drivin home from work and engine made a noise and stopped runninquick. After that he never could get it to run, not knowin too much bout trks. Then the second owner didn't know too much hisself and had several shade trees look at it with no luck either,,,so,,,along comes ole Shade Tree Expert Joe,,Clap
Don't know if ya'll remember but My neighbor Lady had given me a even lower mileage 1996 Explorer wit  the same 4.0 before she passed away and I never done nuttin with it but park it down on lower 40. Now,,,I can either open the front of this engine up for a look see,,and possible quick repairs,,OR,,I can go ahead and pull BOTH engines and install the explorer engine in the ranger,,,,BUT,,,,the original owner told the second dude that engine did not use any oil and I can see that by the spark plugs and the tail pipe shows NO oil burning.
Me being a sort of quizzical and adventurous person, I'm curious what happened and since I'm also gettin older and some lazier, I'm thinkin bout openin up the front to see if a "quick fix" is possible,,,???

Hey JC,,,you remember thet dude that was or is still married to hillary's woman partner,,,Umma something,,,Carlos Danger,,,,,I kinda like that one,,,,,LOLLOL

Hey Steve,,,you mean that even if the pistons are going up & down,,,and all the valves are closed,,it will not build compression,,,???

CHIT,,chit,,chit,,after thinkin on what you said,,,,there's no way it can build compression in the chamber until the intake valve opens to let the piston coming up squeeze the compression,,,,,,,,,
  UM,,,,
  CHIT,,,I KNEW THAT,,,!!!,,,I'ma go find me a hole,,,,,,,WinkLOL

Well,,,suppossedly a dude on The Ranger Station forum told me this 4.0 was a Non-Interference engine,,,so if the valves cannot hit the pistons ,,,,how did all 8 of the intake valves get bent,,,,?? Have to be the intake valves because of the higher lift
Guess  I oughta open the front up but ain't wantin to start another project just yet as I'm wantin to get back on thet obama Silverado cause I gots an update that them Chevy Boys here is just flat gonna wanna pat me on the back,,,,,Clap
See ya at the other thread,,,,,,,Clap

Not bent stuck open from bad gas. Happens often when they’ve sat for long.
Neighbor bought a 93 F250 at auction. Very low miles very nice(pristine) condition. Old man that owned it died. It sat in his garage for 3 years or so. Started and ran good. Neighbor bought it filled with gas and headed home but never made it. Valves stuck open from old gas. Machine shop says they deal with it often.

I was leaning toward broken chain........ some valves OPEN, some CLOSED... no compression if your not getting air IN, then CLOSING the valve.

Joe, pull the valve covers and see how many of the rocker arms are rockin' and how many ain't. Then tap the valve stems and see what happens. May turn out to be a broken cam.    Leon

After reading a little I see these are SOHC engines. Not uncommon for one side or the other to jump time and the cam not rotate.
Just for fun check compression on both sides, if you haven’t.
