Was wondering what oil type to use on my D15 & D17 gas tractors? I think the owners manual says to use straight 30 weight, but assume todays multi viscosity's are much better? Using 15W40 for my diesels. Will it harm the D15 & 17 to use diesel oils? Not sure why it would, but have heard thru the grapevine not to use it?

It won't hurt anything. Diesel motor oil has a different additive package to keep the particles in suspension, but otherwise it will be far superior to anything they had in 1958. Even todays 10W-30 will have far more film strength than the straight 30 of sixty years ago.

I'm with Doug on this. I use the same 15-40 diesel oil in my 190xt, d17 IV gas and my d14. Also have been using it on lawn mowers pressure washers etc as well. Buy it in 5 gallon buckets to save a little money

Well I do use 10W-30 in my lawn mower. That's what Honda specifies. 5W-30 in my snow blower. I don't know why they'd want something as heavy as 30 in a machine that runs in temperatures anywhere from 20F to -20F. Those are air cooled engines and I use synthetic. Walmart Mobil 1 isn't that expensive, especially when you consider that those engines get serviced once a year.
