same as Deere 672 I believe. Anyhow it doesn't want to stay raking especially in heavier hay. What it does it will momentarily stop, the wheel slides for just a few inches then it goes again. The heavier the hay the worse it is up to the point where it will clog up and I have to crank it up to clear it. When it's empty I notice the drive shaft coming down to the wheel will have an ever so slight of a hesitation. It's looks like a very nice rake but there is something amiss. Before this rake we used an old 402 belt drive New Idea which worked very good for 30 plus years except it had car tires so it slid in heavy hay. This Gehl came up and for not much more than a set of proper treaded tires I got a much newer rake with with the correct tires and in much better shape.... so I thought. Any experiences out there with these Deere or Gehl rakes?

I am assuming it is a ground driven rake. If that is the case I had the same issue with a John Deere 660. Turned out the one way clutch mechanism on the right wheel (the one opposite the drive shaft) was stuck and not driving. I freed that up, replaced the spring and unless the wind row was to tall to drive over it would rake it.

Tire chains on the drive wheels will keep it from skidding if the mechanism isn't locked up .

Thanks fellas, I think Manchester Allis may be on to it. I didn't know what was in that wheel hub. I do have a owners manual with a parts break down on the way.

BTW who built these rakes? Gehl for Deere or did Vermeer or.... any idea?

Sounds like the JD 640 rake I used to have in heavy hay it'd slide the wheels stop raking etc.Solved the problem by buying a New Holland 256 rake.
