Good news is that I now have a new clutch in my 190XT! Purchased clutch from Rick Corder. I didn't do it since I don't have time or tractor splitting setup. One side benefit of the clutch fix is that a major oil leak was stopped by replacing an oil seal. At least now none of the gears grind, and it basically goes in out of gear 90% of the time nicely. However, every once in awhile, it won't go into gear. If I let off of the clutch slightly and keep pushing, it will go into gear. Does this imply that the linkage needs adjustment? if so, which way should I adjust it? The pedal does feel different than before fix, but maybe because old clutch was worn out. Should I work the tractor a bit before adjusting? Not sure clutch has a break in period? The guy that did the clutch fix for me suggested that I create more free travel a turn at a time to see if that helped. Is it grinding when you it won't go into gear, or just the gear shift won't slide into the gear like there's something blocking it? It's normal for a transmission to come to a stop and be in a spot where a gear collar won't quite slide into the splines until you let the clutch out a little so the shaft turns just slightly. Sometimes you can try a different gear and it will cause the gears to rotate a little if it goes into that gear. Usually reverse seems to be one of the worst ones about this across all transmissions because of the idler gear sliding in. If it is grinding, then that would indicate needing adjustment or something wrong with the clutch. Hurst ------------- 1979 Allis Chalmers 7000 5800 Hours |

It does not grind, it just won't go into gear. I can push into other gears sometimes and then into my desired gear. Ironically, reverse rarely has had this issue, but it has happened. I never noticed this behavior with my old clutch. I did try double clutching it to see if that mattered and it didn't. In my old clutch, the grinding was out of control in nearly every gear, so this new clutch is much, much better. If this is the way it is, and no adjustment is needed, then I am happy. I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to do a minor adjustment. | Just sounds like mesh not lined up til you turn things a little. Happens alot with semi and clutch brake unless you're rubbing teeth as it stops to feel it. Don't sound like a problem to me. Sounds like old clutch was dragging(turning) always. |

Yes, the old clutch got so bad, had to turn the tractor off to get it in gear, then start it as recommended by Dr Allis. I was going to wait and fix later in winter, but worried about the grinding of the gears doing long-term damage, plus I like using it. I found out that the 7010 I have is a little too big to run the old JD 214T small square baler. 190XT is a much better fit. Although I think that baler was matched to a John Deere A or other two cylinders, so 190XT is big for it as well. The 190XT handles the baler plunger "rocking" better than smaller tractors since it is heavier. If the hay is heavy and you use small tractor, you can get off of the tractor and feel like you have been riding a rocking horse all day. I say drive it and see what it does...I don't think there's a problem, after reading this thread. you'll know soon enough, if there's a problem, but I think it's good to go and you was used to the old clutch...

| Sounds normal to me. sometimes you just have to let the clutch up enough so everything lines up and goes in gear but not so much that you grind them. |

| Sounds normal. As others have said, the gear engagement collars sometimes come to rest in a spot where they won't readily engage the gear. The owners manual advises to put the clutch in and engage the desired gear just before the trans parts stop spinning. With some practice, this can be accomplished. I usually push the clutch pedal down, count to three slowly, and engage the gear. This is at engine speed of about 1000 rpm. Higher engine speeds will take longer after disengaging the clutch. |

| I adjusted the 200 a few months ago before starting the round bale season, made a pleasant difference. New clutch was put in a few years back and was starting to stick a little more. The rod is pretty self explanatory- I don’t think it should take much, just as recommended to you originally. I would make sure you eliminate as much shifter play as possible as well. I would think the XT and 200 are the same. |

Appreciate all of the imput. I used it a fair amount over the weekend and still having a few times hard to get into gear. I think I will adjust the free travel as suggested to see if it helps. I know the pedal isn't going down as far as it used to, so I think I will do a turn at a time and see if it helps.
