OK guys.... does anyone know if 'modern' vehicles record mileage going in reverse ? I know 'old school' speedometer/odometers couldn't but ,hmm, new fangle 'electronic' ones might ... just curious...

anything with electric speedo that shows speed in both directions will record mileage in both directions.

Definitely yes. After noticing the speed registering (many years ago), kept an eye on things and have noticed a tenth of a mile tick by (positively, Thad!) while backing up.

Well, not really. Odometer just has to be very close to ticking to the next tenth when you begin to back up.

I wondered as I saw a low mileage 4x4 that has a plow....hmmm... maybe spent 1/2 it's life going backwards so is it 80,000 miles as posted or 80+40 = 120,000 miles. Sounds like it's really just 80K
Thanks agin guys ! Jay

another thing to know, the fords putters count up and add miles to the vehicle while sitting still and idling. and it won't show on the odometer. the factory/dealers take the word of what the puter shows.

Well,,I KNOW,,for a fact, that the 60's Pontiacs speedo would go in reverse,,,!!!!!! I used to be Grease Monkey at the local Pontiac dealer and they had a really nice 68 GTO that had a few toooo many miles and they could not sell it so the Service Mgr told me to fill it up with gas, get it on the grease rack and start in reverse and "roll" it back to less than 100 miles,,,,,,Yep,,they used to do that folks,,,, Problem was,,,I forgot thet sob was on the rack as it had run out of gas sittin there and ,,,,,and,,,,,,you guessed it,,,the sob had run all the way back to 98,555,,,!!! Dang was the ser mgr MAD,,,, had to refuel a couple of times and run it forward to 56 miles!!! Couldn't figure doin all thet BS cause they had one of the best " Turner backards" guys workin right there,,,,He could take a 90,8356 speedo and turn it back to whatever you wanted,,,and I learned from him,,,,,

My ford does not add miles while idling but it does keep track of hours?
It high idled all night one time to keep the fifth wheel camper heater running, nary a mile but used a 1/4 tank of gas.

I could see it tracking hours. At what "magical rate" does it add miles?
