I bought a 7040 last fall. Over the winter I changed the water pump, coolant, and fixed a few leaks in the oil cooler. It does great on light loads, or when the weather is cold. Above 60°, the temperature creeps up under heavy load.
Where should I be looking for the solution? Today I did a little data collection with an infrared thermometer. When the temp gauge read 200, I got 198° on the thermostat housing, and 170° on the water pump inlet from the lower radiator hose. How much temperature differential should I be seeing from top to bottom on the radiator?

15 to 20 degrees on radiator. Don't check temp. on hoses, they will lie to you. About the age to have radiator cleaned inside and out. MACK

I would start by cleaning the radiator fins out. Sounds like the heat isn't transferring like it should.

I would get the rad boiled out. Check the water pump for excessive play and make sure the belts are tight, make sure there is foam around the rad. Did you change the thermostats? Wouldn`t hurt to do that either.

I think they have 2 thermostats, might be one bad, change them both.

I have not touched the thermostats.
Where is the foam supposed to be around the radiator? I don't see any.

Top.....sides.....lower front......sides of the air cleaner floor. when the hoods are in place the only air that can get to the radiator is thru the GRILLE screen.

Foam goes on both sides and across the top of the radiator. Anywhere you can get it, it seals off the hot air from just being sucked back around the radiator, or another way to think of it, forces the air that goes through the radiator to come from the front of the tractor through the grill. Makes a huge difference. Start there, it's cheap, easy, and needs to be done no matter if your radiator itself needs cleaned or replaced. On the other hand, if you have the time, might as well take the rad out and get it cleaned inside, then put it together and put the foam in.

We had the radiator rodded on the 8050 about 5 years ago and put new foam in at that time. It made a huge difference. Good luck

Have the radiator rodded and buy the foam kit. Clean every where the foam goes and glue in place with that 3M yellow stuff.
