Having an issue with my steering on one of my 720’s. Seams like a lot of play and I am always correcting left to right to go straight. Sometimes it locks if I steer all the way left. A hard pull the the right of the steering wheel will get it back but this seams to be getting worse. Anyone had this issue and if so are there adjustments to make or just have to replace it?

I have a loader on my 720. I've only had it for a few years. Anyway a couple of years ago it stopped steering, the steering wheel turned but had no control.
Some where I learned that a steering gear box from a Chevy, Vega I think, would fit, so I put one in.
I'm rather to say this but after I had my 720 all back together it still would not steer. A nub inside the steering wheel had sheered off, I fixed that and now the 720 pulled to the left.

Didn't they use a Chevy Vega Steering box or close to it? Seems I remember reading that somewhere

Talk to Mike Noonan about that. (He may even see this post. ) I think Mike Brown has a replacement steering setup for the 616-720 machines. Seems like when they have a loader on them, the extra weight is just a bit much for the stock steering box......

I was looking in my repair manual, quite a chore to disassemble so I better wait until late fall to start this project. I use it too much to have it down for that amount of work. I remember when I disassembled the tractor to restore it of what a massive amount of parts there are. I stripped it to the bare frame. That was 8 years ago.
I believe I had heard before that a Vega steering box may work.

I know the feeling. Stripped my 620 down to the bare frame 4 years ago or more, and it still isn't running yet. Got 90% of it together. Hope to fire the engine this summer. I believe the Vega/Monza power box is the ticket for easier steering in a 616-720...
Mike Brown is the guy to get a hold of. He's Mike Noonan's friend.

The GM 605 power steering box is maybe the best choice or maybe an orbital valve with a remote cylinder from a John Deere 318 or similar or a Simplicity Sunstar tractor would work for you. I would not recomend the Vega power steering unit that I used. I doesn't perform well with only a 13/1 steering ratio. The GM 605 I believe has a 20/1 ratio. Mike

Oh so we are talking about power steering? Interesting, tell me more about the connections and power source.

From charge pump into power steering box then out to the hydraulic control valve. Need to remove steering box mounting plate and move back about 5/8".

If you're looking for a manual steering box, I have my old one I would sell.
Thanks, Mike

Did some checking on my front end to figure out why I had so much play. Previous owner had used the incorrect bushing and bolt. Also the nut in the axle was messed up. Had to go to a 3/4” bolt. Luckily local hardware store had a bushing that fit perfect. Ran a 3/4x10 tap in to the brass nut. Nice fit and now the slop is gone. Also helped my steering a great deal.
