I have an Allis 917 that I bought in the mid 80's, when it was a year old. It has a 10" deep/long gas gauge on it.
A couple of years ago I bought a Simplicity 17 GTH-L, which, except for the decals, looks just like the A.C. 917. One exception is the gas cap/gauge is only 7-7/8" long. I ordered a new one listed to fit the A.C. 917. It came a couple days ago, and is only 7-7/8" long.
I've been searching the inter-net for one that is 10" long, so far no can find.
It needs to be 1-1/2" ID. by 10" long. Anyone know where I can find one. And why are the ones that are listed for the 917 only 7-7/8" long ?

Interesting. I've never noticed them being different lengths. I've got some of the 900 series and a 17gthl
I just measured a 912 and the simplicity 17 gthl. Both of them had the 7 7/8 fuel guage.
They both appear to be original caps but anything could have happened overthe years.
I'll measure some more of mine and report back.

Some other 900 series tractors of mine had the 7 7/8 gauges. I've been thinking and I seem to remember changing one in a 916 years ago and it was a longer gauge. The mystery continues.. Gonna check my 918 then I'll be checking to see if I have that old gauge in my spare parts.

I'm wondering if there are/were other models that had different lengths and Allis saved a couple production $ by going to one size.
I think I'm going to rebuild one of my 7-7/8" to 10".

I bought a new one last year for my 917H. Got it from Sandy Lake. I just went to the shop and measured it. 7 7/8”. Put a stick in the tank and it measures 10” to the top lip. Interesting since the original gauge measured the same when I replaced it.

I don't see how you guys keep one of the fuel gauge caps from being broken anyway. My hood always hits my cap no matter what when I close it. I've checked the hood pivot points as well as where the tank is located by the rubber straps and everything looks good to go.

I've never had that problem. Next change I get I'll look to see how close it comes.

I looked today and it looked like the gas tank could be not quite in place which might cause the problem your having.

I've moved the straps that the rubber bands hook to and nothing will hold it in a position where the hood won't hit it. I just live with it. But I won't buy a new fuel tank cap with a gauge because it'll just get destroyed.
