I'm restoring my D17 and would like to have the original markings on it. Mine is a Series I #24174 so, it's right after the upgrade.

I've seen a few (or more) marking formats for the D17's and I'd like to make mine to the right year. Note that my hood has mounting holes in it so, I assume it had a mounting plate, rather than decals. I assume my hood is original and it has a D17 decal in the lower rear corner but, I've seen the decal in other locations on others. The decal appears to be the original one. I found it under the primer, from a very poor re-paint job, done with latex paint. I didn't sand or blast the paint off, I scraped it off with a putty knife and as I was sanding the red primer, the decal appeared so, I masked it off when I painted the hood.

I think this subject would be of benefit to others in their restoration and year and format of other D17's would be beneficial.

Chris, if you see this, what year is your D17?

Thank you for your help

Frank,
Lots of Chris' here but I will take the bait. Mine is a 58 and dont go by mine its not original. Someone painted it at least once and added later decals some not in the right stop. My D17 decal (oval shaped, under the tank) maybe the correct one, but not in the correct orientation.  On mine if you look close you can see the original underneath going in the other direction. There may be actual drawings somewhere with dimensions? I don't have them I try to find pictures of original tractors in old literature.
Regards,
 Chris

My 17 is 29xxx and is a black bar grill and still has the original oval shaped decal for the D17 under the gas tank, on the side panels. I kinda don't think your hood is original, or somebody updated with newer decals and drilled some holes for mounting.

Our D17 serial # is 26132 and was built in late 1959. Purchased new in march 1960. Has decals black on white background & the black bar grill. It's still all original. Your hood has either been modified or changed. Name plates came out with the cream wheels & Persian orange # 2 paint. Ours is PO # 1 with orange wheels. Love that tractor. Use it to feed cattle alot.

Hmmm,
Mine also has the black bar grill, I haven't repainted it, because I wanted to be sure of the format.

I can find no indication of a decal anywhere on the gas tank.

What years would have had a mounted name plates on the hood and is my D17 decal in the same position as those?

Should the emblems be the same until the series II? Is series II when the Persian orange #2 came out?

Did the narrow fronts have different grills?

Frank,
I will follow your resarch too. I believe my tractor should be PO#1 including grill. Also should have the black decals on the hood and D17 oval on the side panels. I would think yours should be similar from the factory. Lots of changes happen to these over the years!
My 17 is pretty original except for the colors of the grill and wheels, and wrong hood decals (white). But to each his own. And it depends what you want. Myself I like the painted lady look of the Series IV and if mine ever gets a refurb, clean, and paint that will be the look!
Regards,
 Chris

I think when the bar grill came out that's when the decals changed fron oval D17 to the type you have on your hood. That location I believe is correct too. Norm Swinford's book, either "Allis Chalmers Farm Equipment 1914-1985" or "A Guide to Allis Chalmers Farm Tractor", has all the details you need along with the serial number breaks. I forget which book though.

Like I said above, I have a bar grill 1960(D17 29625) with pretty much original paint, and it has the Oval decal, under the tank.
Per Norm's book, "The D17 with the new colors had some other minor improvements and the serial number sequence began at 32001. Later, this range became known as the Series II. This is a Series II, after the bar grill "Series I" was discontinued.Image result for Allis Chalmers D17 Series I decals images

I spent a couple of hours this morning, searching through pictures that look farm fresh.
One of the pictures is a restored series I, that is clearly misrepresented as a '61, series II. I included it because the serial # is close to mine.

Thank you, Jim and thank you, Lonn, as well as everyone else that contributed here.

So, it looks like if I, paint the grill bars black and put a decal, over the holes in my hood, I'll be pretty close to the original paint format.
