This is for the Racoon size.  I bought one from harbor freight and it does not work worth a hoot.  lot of times the tripping mechanism does not work.  Also me and the neighbor have had varmints get out somehow.

So i went to amazon and searched for have a heart traps and got a zillion responses.

So who has a time proven live trap and where did you get it specifically.  Sigh, my daughter has a fool proof one but she is 940 miles from here.

Please spare me all the rifles, shotguns, bazookas, hand grenades etc info.

I use a havaheart I got from the local hardware store. it works good. had to catch one my cats a couple times before he stayed out. for a racoon you'll need a extra large size and they are smart and can still get out if it dosen't lock before they grab the door and open it back up.

Farm and Fleet in IL or Fleet Farm in MN/WI might have what you want and they also ship .

The new design that haveaheart went to aint worth chit for coons!!! Trust me  We have 5 of them and possums will hold, coons, forget it!!  the old ones worked super but new ones, NO WAY !! I had a coon in an expensive coyote trap,---finally pried the door over enough to get out! --- The ONLY to kill coons is to shoot! (sorry)!--poison don't work very well either because they walk right past it!

I have a video of an ole tom cat prying his way out of my trap last night.

I just watched youtube video of a cat getting out the same way.

My trap is going back to china, in the meantime I sure wish I could find a trap that would hold them.

Dave...the trick is to keep checking the traps often. I also got my traps from HF, and they work great! came 3 traps ina package deal. I have re-located many coons from my traps...mostly into a show barn of a stockholder!

I have some old Have a Heart traps that I trap varmints with. Coons are a smart animal and will try to get bait out with out going in. use 1 end set and put the bait under the door in far end. Make it walk over the trip. Fish flavored cat food works good

Marshmallow is best bait for coon. Like they said, fix it where they can't reach thru and get bait. Mesh wire will stop that. Tracy

I put a piece of plywood under the trap larger than the trap. I put marshmellows between the trap and wood by stting the trap on the marshmellows past where the plate is but just barely ! I caught 23 one winter and 11 last winter . They trip it whe trying to pull the marshmellows from under the trap. Use a large enough trap so they can't reach in from the outside. Most die
From lead poisoning later .

We use have a heart traps and bait them with 3 of the chocolate tasty cake donuts you get in the $1 bag at Dollar General. 2 isn't enough but 3 will usually catch a coon. I think they're 9 to the bag so you can catch 3 for $1

I have one of those haveaheart type trap - must be a look a like.  Anyhow this big ole tom cat got in it and tripped the trigger.  he went berserk when the door hit him in the rear.

I have a video of him springing his way out of the trap but do not know how to post it.

Anyhow, if someone wants to send me an email address i will gladly send the video so it can be posted.

thendrix, my trap will not hold a coon or a big tom cat, they just pring it open - seems impossible but I have it on film.

Anyhow can you steer me to a trap that a coon or tom cannot spring open and escape?

Raccoons are not only smart, they're incredibly strong... I have had welding gloves on, holding 'em by one back leg, and it was a brutal fight.  Yes, I won, and if catch-and-release is your only disposition, you would not want to observe how I won.

The original HavAHart traps will work about 20% of the time.  They'll hold the door open with tail or leg, then back out.  A toothed leg-trap can be effective, as long as they don't figure it out.

The only truely successful ways, are not within the realm you seek... first , because they're just too adept, second, because you'll catch one, but the other five will get away... and finally, because if you trap them live, and take them somewhere else to release, they'll come right back, or they'll destroy someone else's place.

I have or had a Have a Heart trap and caught over 12 raccoons with it. Had means someone borrowed it and I have not seen it sense then. Take a tuna can and drill some holes in the bottom of the can and then zip tie it in the center of the back of the cage because they will try to reach in and drag the can over to the side while outside of the cage. Dry cat food worked for me as bait. Used heavy leather gloves to move cage to truck. Drove them several miles away and released them.

Harbor freight works well here. As stated, marsh mellows under the trap work great for us. Cat food, caught every darn tom cat.

What size is your trap? The have a heart traps I've seen come in 3 or 4 different sizes. Some small enough for a chipmunk or squirrel. The traps we use for coons are about 12" wide by 14 or maybe 16 inches tall and 24 to 30 inches long or so.

We have one an older and very strong trap. We wanted to catch a Ricky Raccoon, but caught instead, a Pepe Le Pew. I can still see and taste the green mist. Think twice before you use one next to the house.

chas, dang never thought of the land mine.  LOL

Anyhow the trap is the large one I bought from HF.  That thing will not hold the coon or cat.  i have a film of catching big tom and how he just sprung his way out.

I guess my question is that all the haveaheart traps look exactly like the trap i got from HF.

SO will any of the ones sold as haveaheart be better/stronger than the HF and keep the critter in the trap?

i have 2 traps i use,,,they may be older havahart traps i dont know,,i just went out to look,,,no name on the one i looked at,,,,but it is 15-16" square,,,42" long,,,trap door on the end that is spring loaded and locks closed,,,got them at the local farm store here in Missouri,,,(Farm & Home),,,i use cheapest cat food,,,or a little pile of horse feed,,,or anything else i can get my hands on,,,put it all the way in the back so they have to go in to get it,,,,bet i have caught at least 100 coons in the last 5-8 years in them,,,,NEVER had one get out,,,if the trap is tripped it has a animal in it

i tried the relocate thing once,,,when i opened the trap the coon ran out turned around and tried to bite me,,,,that was the last one the got to go for a truck ride,,,,the rest have gotten dumped out in a pile,,,40gr last meal

i will look at the other trap in the barn when i go out there in awhile,,,it may still have a tag on it

i think the key is getting the trap big enough so they cant over power the lock,,,and the length is good too

like i said i have never had an animal get out of these two traps i have,,,,unless i want them out ,,,,,most have been dead when they got out

coons can tear up a lot of sh,,,,stuff

my .02
