I just put a new clutch in my D17-IV, but something it's not exactly right. It only wants to grind when trying to get in gear. I adjusted the pedal as long as possible - and looked through the plate - seems like the throw-out is working correctly.    If I start the tractor in gear, the clutch seems to 'mostly' disengage.   There is still a little power rolling the tractor forward - which I can stop with the brake no problem.   It is similar to the power director in neutral on a cold day (however, this is not the power director - this description is with the power director in fully in gear).   With the brake on, there is a lot of throw as I let the clutch out before it really begins to deliver actual power - which seems right since I adjusted the pedal. Therefore, it seems like the pressure plate is working OK as well.   Just can't figure out why it's not disengaged enough to get in gear.   Please let me know if you have any ideas.

A series 4 gas takes a different clutch disc than any other D-17 tractor. The clutch hub is machined shorter on the rear to prevent the clutch disc from being jammed up against the clutch shaft splines where they end.  Also, I always replace the clutch shaft oil seal and the hollow shaft oil seal and remove the bronze bushing inside the hollow shaft to prevent it from dragging against the spinning clutch shaft, which can cause what you are complaining about.

Did you adjust the release levers on the clutch?

Thanks & God Bless

Dr. Allis - I believe I bought the correct parts - at least they were sold for use on series IV. I didn't replace any seals (nothing was leaking). The 'bronze bushing' theory sounds plausible.   I didn't change any of that or look for it - if I split the tractor again I'll have to see if I can find that.

Dennis - I didn't adjust anything - I assumed they were factory set.   This seems plausible as well.
