If you fix third gear you need to put in second and reverse idler gear all matching gears. Everything is available from sandy lake implement who is on this site. Have put in many sets on d10 through d15s, same basic transmission.

You can also weld up the lugs on the gear and coupler. The welder just needs a good gear to compare to.

Yes and no, it depends on how bad the lugs are on the gear.

Make sure any thrust bearings are doing their job if you dig into it. If you have wear, and gears have to much end play on the shaft, your shift collar won't engage as far, adding to early failure.

I can't detect any front to rear movements in the gear

That’s pretty bad. Replace or repair the gear and coupler.
If you just replace the coupler the gear will start working on the coupler and shorten it’s life.

The PART  I use to keep MY CA from jumping out of third gear is my RIGHT HAND holding pressure on the  gearshift lever up and to the right in the third gear position. Especially when going down hill in third.

Maybe a turnbuckle would keep it in gear some, but will eventually wreck the fork or more.
Fix it with a new gear and a new coupler, and don't EVER grind it into gear, and it will last another 50+ years.

Looking at the picture everything was fine till I saw the lug.  Must be replaced.  Anything else is temporary.  It is so much trouble to get there you may as well replace the gears and collars Randy mentioned.  Pricey but necessary
We could never get operators to NOT SHIFT on the go.  Chewed up the transmission.
Good Luck!

If I were going to do a tear down I would replace all three parts. 2nd, 3rd, and sliding coupler/reverse gear. Can't see amount of damage to internal splines of coupler in pics. But can see contact area on 3rd gear splines and it looks to me like your detent position wasn't right to begin with. Even with the damage you have it might be worth it to see why it appears not to be engaging all the way. 2nd gear look good on engagement and it has more damage. (To much gear grinding huh) but I take it that its not jumping out of 2nd ??

Need to correct part of what I said. 2nd gear damage is not worse. 3rd gear is. Engagement wear point looks short of where it should be on 3rd gear is my point.
