Looking at a 1982 6060 fwd , serial number 2707 , I have heard talk that the engines had some front engine seal problems , what year did they fix that ? , is there anything else I should look for , the tractor has 5000 hrs on it and the owner says nothing has ever been done to the motor except general oil changes , thanks

Make sure it has the "bra" support on the front of the crank pulley. Check and see if there is oil leaking from front crank seal. They are a pretty good tractor overall.

I believe they were field installed by the dealers. Mine has one, as have all the ones I've ever been around.

My 6060 has a bra too.  5000 hours is about rebuild time, isn't it?  Mine is cold blooded and I use the block heater below 60 degrees.  Almost impossible to find 18.4 x 28 tires.  Nice comfortable tractor.

If it's in good condition and doesn't use oil 5000 hours could only be half way to an overhaul. I'd worry more about general condition than hours

Our 6080 has 7000 hours and still runs good. I wouldn’t worry about the hours.

Also the later 6000 series production years had the international thrust bearing reinforced. That’s probably about the time the 6070 went into production so my guess is all 6060s should have the bra. I cannot confirm that. Maybe somebody else will know for sure. 82 would be one of the early ones so I would expect to see it on that one.

Thanks for all the great information, are most of the parts for this series tractor still available, the 3 point doesn’t work, is there a cable that runs to the main control for that ? Thanks

Our original 6080’s made 8000 ish on engines. One had a hole in the sleeve the other was done as preventative maintenance.

Most of the chassis is made by Fiat.  Basically the engine and sheet metal are all Allis.  The 3 point hitch is controlled by cable and it is very common for them to get rusted up.  As far as I know, AGCO still carries them.  Fortunately I have never replaced mine.  I oil them every couple of years.  My 6080 does not get used much so I have not had to replace much on it.  I will say that it is a good and economical tractor to drive.  When buying a tractor this age, how it was used and maintained makes all the difference in how it will work for you.  Remember, if it's cheap, it's cheap for a reason!

From what I remember as to the front "bra" update all 6080s were to have the kit installed by the dealer. 6060s that were on dealer lots and under factory warranty were to have the "bra" installed. However, if you had a 6060 that was out of warranty when the update came out they were available but customer was supposed to pay for them. Now my understanding is there were few 6060 s that were already out of warranty when the kit came out.
The reason behind the update is there were 6080s (which had a more robust 2 stage clutch) running in the midsouth (Tennessee latitude) that were blowing up because it was not cold enough for all the tractors to get block heaters and when cranking the cold (below 40 degrees) engine with the pto and foot clutch pressing against the flywheel for 15 to 20 seconds with no oil pressure, it was a perfect storm. Add to that the manual was less than clear (in my opinion) the definition of "seasonal disconnect" (the leaver on the left).
We used our 6080 on the feed grinder then hooked it to a disc for 60 to 80 hours then back to the grinder. We did not disengage the "seasonal disconnect" because in our minds we were still using the pto in the season.
Only years later was the real story of the "bra" explained. Our local dealer and All is did not want it for public consumption that the 6000 series had a major flaw. The competition would have gone gangbusters with that knowledge and at the time Allis sold more 6080s than any other model tractor. (According to Norms book)

Thanks for all the information, one more question, the front drive has a lot of movement, don’t know if there is pins in there that are wore out , the wheels are tipped out , can a guy still get the parts to fix this and is it going to be expensive, thanks

I can assure you, if you are talking king pins and U-joints on an FWA axle, it won't be cheap.

We have a early 6060. “Bra” kit came out after dads went out of warranty. Local dealer never mentioned the kit and we didn’t hear about until many years later. We have always operated the pto disconnect per the book and have had no issue. In my opinion it was a major flaw but has not given us issues. The kit is no longer available so we are stuck without one. Hopefully it wont cause issues because it really is a great tractor. Just replaced both clutches last year and the fuel pump has been rebuilt. Not bad for a 37 year old tractor, I would love to have a FWA but honestly we’ve never needed one. I would check on parts availability, cost, and then make your decision. Otherwise, I would highly suggest one especially if you need FWA.

Very few parts still available for the 1980's fwa except from bone yard. Issue for all colors not just Allis.

Kingpins are not that bad in price considering, they are or were still gettable through Agco 2 years. I think a little over $200. They say CNH on them since its Fiat. The sgims are five plus bucks each.
