Finally got around to checking my diff on my 917H. Not good news as all pinions are chewed up. Even worse news, according to Jacks small engines website, they are no longer available. Anyone have this issue and where did you get parts? Calling SLI tomorrow but would like to reach out to others.

Thinking a used parts place might be your only option. I still use my 917-h,-- hope it never craps out!

Sara and Bill at SLI hooked me up with some really nice used pinions. They are no longer available new. Not sure why I have not done maintenance on the differential as the manual recommends. Quite a job but I could do it in my sleep now. Thanks to MikeZ for sending me instructions from a manual he had. They were a huge help. It appeared the grease inside got hard and spun off the gears leaving them with no lubrication. I recommend at least to pull off the right wheel, axle collar, and slide the outside diff carrier off the axle. Check the condition of the grease and the pinion gears. If the grease is not surrounding the gears or appears to be stiff then disassembly will be required to clean out the old grease and repack it. The grease zirk on the outer diff carrier only greases the axle at diff carrier, not the differential itself.
My 917H is 36 years old and is still a good mower. It does a lot of mowing so I’m glad she is back together.
