I just found this Forum, and I have seen a couple of posts, but I havent found the full answer. So, I am sorry if this has been discussed many times before.

I am converting a D17 S3 from a generator to alternator. It is still a (+) ground system. What all do I need to do to make this right and functional? I do not want to cut any sheet metal.

First, welcome to the forum! There's more information here than you can find in any Library. The family members here have Orange blood, not Red. I offer a Alternator retrofit kit for the "D" series Tractors. One thing you have to remember is to switch over from Pos. ground to Neg. ground. That means changing the Battery cables, and coil wires around to Neg ground. I do not offer an Alternator bracket as of yet for the conversion, so you would have to fab a bracket or modify the original bracket. Thank you sir! I hope to start this project in June. I will keep this info and definitely give you a call before I rip into it. Until then I will keep asking a few questions and doing a LOT of reading on here.

Just so happens..... I finished the conversion on our D17 IV this past weekend. Took a couple weekends to do the work as I'm a 2 hr drive from where the tractor is and had to do other stuff also when I was out at the farm. Anyways, I'll post some pictures this weekend and show you what I did for the conversion.

Didn't have to cut any tin, and the alternator still stays "within the bounds" of the tractor frame which is what I wanted also.

By the way, I bought the conversion kit (alternator, wiring harness, electronic kit, etc....) from Steve NJ and he can provide you any guidance you may need to convert it.
