I have a 2007 half ton 2wd GMC Sierra with a 4.3 V6. The first new truck I ever bought. When I got it, the only thing I wanted to pull was a bass boat. It's still a great truck and does 90% of what I need it to do. There are times when I need more towing power. Especially this time of year when I'm fertilizing. Two ton is a big load for this truck. I pulled this spreader with 4500 lbs. of fertilize. Only 9000 lbs. this year so two trips wasn't that bad, it usually takes more. They are other times as well. I can't pull a trailer big enough to haul the D-10 and B at the same time. I have traction issues at times too. My truck can get stuck on wet grass. But I always make do, and figure out a way to get the work done. After all, my Father never had a heavy duty truck. I'm farming the same farm, so why do I need one? It must be want, I don't think I can justify paying 70k for a 3/4 ton 4WD just yet. |

If it were me, I’d stick with what you’ve got. Dad had a ‘09 and we really liked it. The new ones are nice, but unless I *had* to have one, I’d stick with the ‘07. I guess to sum it up in Shameless’s words, “I’m cheap!” |

| I worked for a fertilizer company for years, the same company had 4 stores in 4 different towns, each store had a 3/4 ton 2-wd pickup and the rest were 1/2 ton 2-wd pickups. I see that what you are trying to pull is on;y a one axle trailer, find a company that uses 2 axle spreaders and they will pull a lot better. one year our company bought all new ferd 3/4 tons and they didn't have any better suspension than the 1/2 tons. I pulled a lot of weight with 1/2 tons, some 4x4 and some 2-wd. the 4x4 was only used for help in hooking up in the fields or the uneven surfaces we delivered at. |

Brother shows up with a 2019 Expedition, tags out at $104K CDN bux ! Nice, well I liked the seats...split adjustable, heated, coled, 5 zone massage....TONS of computers and electronics to go wrong ($$$$!!!!). OK, it's not his, just a loaner from Ford as he testdrives/write in mags about vehicles. To replace my '97 F150 would be $42K.+15% taxes..... coins I don't want to waste. Easier to spend $1K /per year until the grimreaper comes for me. For the times you NEED a bigger ride, ask a fellow farmer or friend. Buy a used 3/4 ton , 2013-2015 can be found for a lot less than new .I have been keeping my eyes open for one as my 2005 is starting to show its age .I will not be paying 70 grand for a new truck but looks like I will be spending 25 to 30 grand for a used one . Shameless, This company has nice newer spreaders with two axles. I usually try to get one, but they were all out. The spreader in the pic actually broke down with me, with half my fertilize still on it. I ended up having to settle for a smaller ground driven unit with a manual lever. I didn't care for that thing, but I got the fertilize on the ground. You all make good points. That's kind of the way I felt too. Unless my farming operation gets bigger, I'm going to hold off buying a truck. Although, I will probably keep wanting. |

Ranse, Its probably a want thing more than a need thing. But I traded up to a used F250 and paid about half what a new one costs. I like the truck and it does a great job hauling a ton of water in the bed or the D17 on the gooseneck. We arent getting any younger. Got to have some toys before we check out. Also you need a nice ride to drive up here and fish for lake runs and walleyes!:) Yea my dad made it with a 2 wheel drive also! I dont remember him getting stuck either.
