I have recently acquired my Grandfathers 1955 WD45. I am having the Carburetor rebuilt and I am looking for some insight. When I removed it, the spring ran from the choke to the block coolant drain. I have a 1956 WD45 that has the same carburetor and the spring runs from the throttle lever to block drain. The spring that is on the tractor is a rather heavy spring like a IH Governor return spring. I am just trying to hook it up correctly. When it was connected to the choke it would not allow the choke to stay set. It was very stiff. Any help would be great. I looked in the parts guide and it shows a spring on the choke but it looks much lighter duty. Also the one I show on the governor lever to the block drain was used prior to my engine code. I am just looking to make it work the best. The spring seems to heavy for a choke return spring so I thought it might be an anti surge spring which I show is not used on the year tractor I have. Any help would be great.

There is no spring from throttle rod to drain cock on a WD45. Someone may be masking a governor problem by sticking one on there. The one for the choke is strong enough to open the choke fully but in no way is hard to operate from the seat.

As the doctor says, there should be no spring attached to the governor rod.

However, early WDs did have such a spring connected between the governor

rod and the draincock to prevent "surging".

My '51 WD has the spring and the governor is very responsive, a feature

these tractors are known for. No surging whatsoever.

The doctor's right; a prior owner may have had a

governor problem which he was attempting to correct.

As for the choke return spring the original setup was a light spring

connected to the draincock.

However, both my WD and WD-45 have a small torsion spring on the choke shaft itself.

In any event, unlike many old time automobiles, the choke is not made to be "set".
