I'm thinking about finally putting power steering on the WD. I don't think my shoulders can take the "Armstrong" steering much longer. I'm wondering about the pulley on the Eaton PS pump. It looks like from the pictures I've seen that the larger pulley (6"+/-) might be needed to get enough belt clearance around the waterpump, not the typical 4 1/2" pulley you see on most pumps. Or will the 4-1/2" pulley work? Also, I'm seeing the slip-joint type couplers on the steering shaft where the torque generator is spliced in. Do I need the jointed couplers or will the solid ones work - they sure are a lot cheaper!

You will need the double crank. pulley to start with. I have a wd with add-on char-lynn and a wd-45 with what looks like factory ps. --weird lookin' setup. If you need pics. for ideas just ask!

So Mack, you're saying these will not work? http://https://www.steinertractor.com/ABC497-Economy-Char-Lynn-Steering-Coupler-For-Tractors-With-U-Joint-" rel="nofollow - http://www.steinertractor.com/ABC497-Economy-Char-Lynn-Steering-Coupler-For-Tractors-With-U-Joint-" rel="nofollow - http://www.steinertractor.com/ABC497-Economy-Char-Lynn-Steering-Coupler-For-Tractors-With-U-Joint-

What would you be using that coupling for? If you add a belt driven PS pump, all you need is the double pulley on the crankshaft, no coupling of any kind. Mount the pump off to the side and run a belt from the second , unused pulley, to it.

Here's what you need. At the end, you can see the pump is mounted about straight above the center of the engine, with a belt diving it off the crank pulley. https://youtu.be/SDhZbrfia7w" rel="nofollow - https://youtu.be/SDhZbrfia7w

You will need a coupler like that on each end of the char-lynn unit to connect the steering shaft back together! You will have to cut the precise amount from your existing shaft, then drill the pin holes to connect them back together, you also need a support in there .

CTucker, I see on you're installation you've got the fancy 2 piece couplers with the slip joints on either side of the torque generator. That seems to be what everybody uses. Must be a reason so I guess I'll just have to shell out the $200 plus for a couple of those. They're pretty much the same price everywhere I find them. http://www.steinertractor.com/ABC380-Slip-Fit-Coupler-for-tractors-that-need-a-u-joint-" rel="nofollow - http://www.steinertractor.com/ABC380-Slip-Fit-Coupler-for-tractors-that-need-a-u-joint- I thought since it's a straight shaft maybe I could get away with the simple one piece ones with two roll pins.

CTucker, or anyone else with access to one, you could answer my original question if you could measure the diameter of the power steering pump pulley - above the water pump. If my understanding is correct it should be either around 4-3/8 or 5-7/8.

If you don't lined up perfect, it will put side load on unit, causing it to leak and possible lock up. Best to spend the money now. MACK

Mack I think I think you're onto it. I came to the same conclusion after thinking about it for a while. With the straight solid couplers there would be no give either alignment-wise or lengthwise, so even the slightest twisting or flexing of the tractor frame would put stress on the torque generator - it would be trashed in no time I expect. Guess I'll have to get the slip joints.

Mine has a slip coupler on the end that goes to the steering wheel and a solid coupler on the other end. there is some play when you grab the steering wheel climbing of and on the tractor. the other end goes straight to the shaft support then down to the u joint.

Dave, now that makes sense to me. Should give the assembly enough wiggle room to work and saves you about $80.

Char-lynn pump pulley's are 4-1/2" dia, on both of my wd's. pump sits directly above engine. the wd-45 factory unit is mounted upper left of engine----totally diff. animal.
thanks; ac fleet

Thanks AC Fleet - that's the most common size I'm seeing on the old Eaton (mostly Ford) pumps for sale online.
