Has anyone used a backhoe on a d17? I want to try one and am looking for information on how to attach and general experience. Tractor has front mounted pump so hydraulics should be okMike

It will probably make some difference if you intend the tractor to still be used for other normal farming duties, or a dedicated backhoe unit.  There's not much to get ahold of on the back. I think I'd want to get hung on the drawbar mounting brackets and the rear axle tubes to keep it from moving around. Any good front mount loader always attaches to the axle tubes with a big U bolt-clamp and angle iron.

My brother had a d series (D14?) with a back hoe/loader. It didn't have power steering so it was vey difficult with the weight of the machine to move it into position to do work.

It was an LP gas model also so that limited the practicality of where he could use it at.

Had a Woods backhoe on a 170.  3 point model.  Worked OK.  In addition to the linkage, it needed to be chained down to the hitch so you had down pressure, otherwise it lifted up the 3 pt linkage and your stabilizers were floating in the air.  This unit used a PTO pump and the tank for the oil was just below the seat.

You don't need any special pump.  It will work fine off of the tractor pump.  You just need to add a return outlet at the back.  Well, mine did on my D14 anyways!

TThanks for the replies. It has given me some confidence to do it. I have seen a couple on crags list I will be looking at. If anyone in western NY or Pa has one to sell send me a private email so I could look. I am only using this for my land improvement as we move back to our wood lot farm
