| Well, I've been installing HVAC equipment for the past 45 years but have yet to come across an Allis-Chalmers furnace. Has anyone seen one or know where one is? Apparently they were made to burn either coal, gas or oil. Book says they were developed in the 1930s. |

I'd heard that they were in the same class as the 'Iron Fireman' ones. I've never seen one. If my old furnace man was still alive, I'd bet he's seen one. I'll ask his son if hes ever mentioned one. ------------- "Allis-Express" 19?? WC / 1941 C / 1952 CA / 1956 WD45 / 1957 WD45 / 1958 D-17 |

Only thing I could find on home furnace is this from jpesseks post 1978 - A-C acquires American Air Filter, based in Louisville, Kentucky. Don't forget the A-C refrigerators, mini bikes, golf caddy carts, push lawn mowers... There's a section in the book "The Allis-Chalmers Story" by C H Wendel entitled "Home Heating Systems" on pages 167-168 that has several photos of the different models. There is also a photo of a coal stoker model installation on page 289 in the book "An Industrial Heritage, Allis-Chalmers Corporation" put out by the Milwaukee County Historical Society. (This is an excellent, excellent book to read on the history of A-C.)  I don't know if it's still in print, but there's one listed as new on eBay now.

Thanks Ted, I'd be interested in his response. I think you're pretty close with the Iron Fireman comparison. I've taken a few of those out of homes in my earlier years. Our Company sells Lennox, Water Furnace and Central Boiler main lines, so a person would find quite a few of those in this area. I wonder how the A-C furnaces would have been sold, distributed and installed.
