I have a 4 row model 74 planter and I’m trying to figure out if no-till coulters were an option. I’m going to be no-tilling beans into pasture ground and think a coulter ahead of the disc openers will be necessary.

What frame do you have? 74 is a planter unit. No till work some frames but not all frames

Unless it was a No-Till special planter, the no-til coulters were an option.

How do I tell what frame it has? It is a pull type planter with hydraulic cylinder to lift.

One hydraulic cylinder ?? and only a two-bar frame?? That planter wasn't really designed for a no till coulter. The planters with 3-bar frames used the no-till coulters.

I'm not saying it hasn't been done, but that frame is light and may not keep the coulters in the ground in true no-till conditions. That frame was made for fertilizer on the front bar.

We planted no-till with a 2 bar frame for years. The 74 units on the conventional planters and the no-till ones are the same the only difference is the frame.

We had two 55 gallon drums full of water mounted on ours for extra weight to make it go in the ground. Sometimes if the ground was real hard we had to hang a couple of extra 100lb suitcase weights on it to make it go in the ground.

If you do it, use the thin fluted coulters, the bubble coulters and the wavy ones are much harder to get into the ground.

You will also need the no-till tires with the center rib if your planter units don't already have them.
