I bought a 780 chopper with a two row corn head a few years ago. Its in excellent shape. However I was wondering if I could find a hay pick up or direct cut head for it. Are there many out there?

Hay pickup heads can be found but a direct cut is rare. My Grandfather bought a new 780 with 2 row and a direct cut head. I to would like to find one for my 780. Last fall we planted oats in Aug for a cover crop and after a couple hard freezes we used a direct cut head to chop 10 acres and put in a silage bag. If you do find two let me know as I would travel to get a usable one. Tom

I have not seen many Direct Cut Headers for the 780/782 on this site or sales ads.  The Pickup seemed to be the preferred for silage. It is rare to see a Direct Cut for used New Holland, Gehl, JD, etc as well

Ford sold a 680 Forage Harvester that is identical to the AC 780/782 - not sure about the Header options available, but might help in your search - keep an eye for a blue one

Marketbook has an AC 782 with a two row corn Header and the description notes a "Bean Head" is also available - might be worth a call

Our local AC Dealer had this Direct Cut Header out in his bone yard.  It is very well built, and didn't take too long to get everything running.  The auger fingers were seized, but lots of WD-40 and TLC got them working.  The reels wood pieces are quite weathered.

Good luck with your search, and I will keep an eye out as well

How well did the chopper chop the corn? Did it shred it or chop it? Will that corn head work on 30" rows or is it for wide rows?

The 780 was cut and throw. It chopped well if you kept the knives sharp and had a good shear bar and kept it set properly. They threw corn much better than grass but worked ok if you had good windrows and it was quite high in moisture.

The two row corn head I had was wide (34" to 36" rows). I'm nit sure if they were all the same.

A few years ago, when the farm was sold, I sent a working 780 with a one row corn, two row corn, direct cut and pickup head for scrap. I tried to give it away to anyone that would use it, but I had no takers. I gave my working 443 baler with thrower to a guy and found out later that he sold some parts off it and scrapped it.
