Many moons ago in the heyday of pulling many Allison Air craft engines were used as they were high hp to weight and most importantly cheap.... as the govt was scrapping them.
Many found out there were LH and RH rotation engines as well.  Anyway, I found an old service overhaul manual for the Allison V12 1710 engine that  we had ordered for a customer who could not get one to run - he had a wrong rotation engine shipped to him - actually they forgot to change cams... engine came from Skip Cooley  Enterprises  37 Green Meadow Avenue , Thousand Oaks California  91360    A Division of  Dinatech Co.
I have a letter where he priced a running 1710 Allison and one with a cracked block for
$2000   - in 1977 .
The HP max was at  3000 RPM was 1,550 at 60" Hg - some of you can tell - it would be either 29 PSI of boost _ I doubt- or 14 PSI of boost ?  Max RPM is 3150  and at higher rpms and boost a 50/50 mixture of water and alcohol is injected.
These were used in the P39 and P38 and others.  Higher HP units were turbo charged  - few of these were available and the most were single staged supercharged.  Interesting reading ... oh yeah the rods were not side by side but one wide slotted rod clamped the crankshaft and the other bank 's rod ran on top of the rod that rides on the crank throw as it has a polished round surface that the narrower rod runs on and through the slots of the beam of the big rod... unique.

Neighbor to my father has been running a pair of Allisons on their puller for many years (Hott Damn). Always pulls well even when (1) engine is down. Not sure what engine they use, but have looked at several parts on the CMM at work over the years. Think he told me it makes well over 3000hp per engine, fuel injected, non-turbo or supercharged.
