I'm overhauling a  G engine and I have all bearings in place (rods and mains). I have excessive crank end play . I have .067 whereas I should only .007. Does whether I have pulley in place or not effect end play. Advice please

That's a continental Y69 if I recall correctly...  Manual here:

Page 66:
"CRANKSHAFT END PLAY
1> Check the crankshaft end play before replacing the gear cover.  Ah shim pack containing shims of 0.002" and 0.008" thickness is oncprporated in the assembly between the front end fo the main bearing journal and th ecrank gear and by removing or adding shims, this end play can be corrected to fall within specifications.

At all time swhen checking end play, the crank gear mus be tightened firmly against the shim pack, which can be done by using a sleeve or the regular pulley, slipping it over the crankshaft and using the standard assembly parts to tighten the pulley and gear in place."

Yes, the pulley or some form of sleeve spacer needs to be installed to seat the crankshaft gear and shims.
If you need shims, I got mine from Grainger. Just search for "Arbor Spacers". I believe the keyway notch may a size larger, but does matter.

I may have a few extra shims. PM if interested.

I had a hard time with setting end play on mine until I discovered the new thrust bearing was warped. Acted like a spring washer.

I had to pull the crankshaft pulley off to change shims three times before I was satisfied with the end play.
My book calls for end play between .003 and .007. I set mine slightly over .003

The G engine is a Continental N62, not a Y69.
