Can someone give details on how the engine lubrication system works on the 125 engine? I know it has an oil pump and oil filter, but I seem to recall that some parts are splash lubricated. Which parts? And what do you think of 40wt oil and operation in cold winter. I have 15-40 in mine and I started it when cold, it took abnormally long for the pressure gage to start moving. Which got me to wondering if any oil is "splashing" around. Thank you.

I'd follow the manual- 10w in the winter, or 10w30. I use 15w40 year round, but it sits in a garage that never gets too cold in the winter. Others can answer the lubrication system question better than I can, but the crank is pressure lubricated and that's where "splash" lubrication normally takes place in older and smaller engines. ------------- 1951 B |

Thanks guys. That thread was just two months ago, maybe that put a bug in my head about it. Yes, the shop manual describes the oiling system very well. Pages 53 and 54. Bottom line, the oil pump supplies the camshaft bearings and then the crankshaft MAIN bearings with pressurized oil. Holes in the camshaft spray oil out onto the connecting rods/bearings. The spayed out oil also makes/splashes its way to the wrist pins and cylinder walls and rings.

| Sort of pressure to the main bearings. No pressure inside the camshaft. The free flow oil is slightly blocked in the camshaft but not enough to build pressure. The centrifugal force pressure from the spinning camshaft sends oil to the main bearings thru the camshaft bearings. Same force the rod bearings get from the spinning crankshaft. They didn't put the spring and relief ball in the front of the camshaft until the D 10 thru the D 17 engines. Then the camshaft was not drilled with the little holes in line with the rods. The oil was then pressurized thru the camshaft bearings to the main bearings where the crankshaft was drilled from the main journals to the rod journals. |

| The use of 40 wt or 15W-40 in a splash lube engine is a bad idea for Winter time use. 5W-30 would be a much better choice than that. |

That oil system description is on pages B-C53 and B-C54. There isn't one for the CA, so it must be the same as the B and C. Gerald J. |
