A couple of years ago when I was getting ready to torch dad and mom's old garage I just about left grandma's old pie safe in there and let it turn to ash. It was in poor shape with the bottom rotted off and the doors long gone but I decided to pull it out and brought it back then stored it up in the attic. I still wasn't sure if it was worth saving but it was at least up in the attic. Well since I'm retired now I decided to see what I could do with it last week. Thus far I was able to dissemble the sides and have been able to remove the paint from it using an air sander and 40 grit discs. Most of the heavy sanding is finished. I set up my bench top bead blasting cabinet and was able to clean up the tins. Right now it looks like it has been well worth saving. Sorry I don't have any pictures of what it looks like now as I'm laid up at the moment. Here is a picture of what I started with. Dang,,,Stan,,,what ever happened to thet knee,,,???? chit that's hurtin me just lookin at it,,,,,hopin you is able to get back on your feet soon,,,,  UMMmmm,,,what's a pie safe,,,?? Is it to keep folks like ole Shameless from eatin up all them good pies your honey bakes,,,???

| I have my Great Aunts old Pie safe. My Dad refinished it back in the 70s as had sat in a dirt floor garage most of its life. Tins were still good just had to scrub loose rust scale off them when he rebuilt it. Was made of what was at the time Junk Black Walnut!! Trees too small for pricey lumber but good enough for cabinets as these. Use it these days to store quilts and blankets for spare bedrooms. |

Ours: Tins allowed air to circulate(cooling) where flies or other bugs had a tough time getting to the pies. |

Wow, your pie safe turned out great!! Did you put anything on the tins after you cleaned them up? I'm concerned that they will start to rust over time if not coated with something? Joe my knees have hurt any time I get out of a car or go up/down stairs or get on a ladder. Been hurting for maybe 5 years. Decided to do something since its cold outside. They went in and smoothed out the back side of the kneecap and then punched some holes in the bone to create scar tissue which will add some cushion in the joint. Had it done Thursday and got my first shower and shave this morning. SO,,,,then,,they really are for keepin pies safe,,,,?? We never had one of those,,,chit if our Mother ever made any,,,as many as there were of us kids,,them pies wasn't safe anywhere in the house,,,,,,,

I agree, that HURTS just lookin!! Man that thing is swelled up! That's a new one on me Stan, poking holes to add scar tissue for cushion. Where did you hear about this procedure? PaaaaLEASE tell me you're getting lots better and your knees don't hurt as badly as before. I'd like to know if the procedure worked! Might be awhile before all the swelling is gone but most of that in the first picture is bandage and about 10 wraps of that ace bandage. He said if my pain was because of the roughness of the back of my kneecap then I would have immediate relief but if is the cushion in the joint it will take 2-3 months before it gets better. He said that I would never need joint replacement but he may change his mind if he attends a new RV and boat show down the road. 😜 Yesterday there was so much pain that I would have bet that I would never walk again but today I'm off the pain meds and think maybe one more day of using the crutch before going solo. | whew...i'm also cringing at that pic! we didn't have one of them pie safes, but mom always found somewhere to hide the pies so we wouldn't eat them before supper! take care of that knee, hope it heals fast for you! whew! |

Stan, take care of that knee..........and that pie safe, too! Family heirlooms like that are a treasure even if they take a good bit of TLC to get them back in shape. Got my grandmother's in my kitchen, remember it sitting in a small room she used for a pantry just off her kitchen many, many years ago. ------------- Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God. |

Thanks. Knee is feeling better and it is all I can do to not be out in the shop working on it. Off the crutch now but still have swelling so my leg is still on the pillow propped up most of the time. And this darn weather!! As soon as I get laid up it turns into spring around here!! That looks great Hubert!! Mine is laid out very similar with a section below and another above with a single drawer in the middle.
