Some how I have lost the section in my shop manual for the CA's.  Can I adjust the hand/axle clutch somehow?  I have a Wood's mower under it and it started to slip while mowing.  Hope I don't have to tear it down too far, I haven't got the motor back in the 45 I took out 2 years ago making room in the shop is getting harder all the time.  Thanks everyone and sorry I have not been here or to any of the shows this year, trying to figure out a new job.

Yes you can adjust it. If you look down by where the lever attaches, there will be a bolt that you take out. It locks the hand lever to part of the clutch body. Once you have that bolt out you can turn the body by using a prybar.

Thanks Brian, I'll check it out once the humidity goes down (Jan-Feb) or when it stops raining every third day.

I think nine times out of ten, if the hand clutch slips it will be oiled up from a seal leak. Hope you get lucky and get by with an adjustment.

My guess is you will have to tear it down. The adjustment doesn't make it clamp any harder so as long as you have a little free play in your lever, you are not going to make any difference adjusting things.

Replace your axle seals while you are in there. Norms toys and Sandy lake have parts in stock most times. Pretty easy to repair other than the rust you will most likely encounter.

I 2nd the opinions regarding teardown/rebuild. The adjustment mentioned is for the clutch actuator that engages and moves the clutch and is of limited help to prevent slippage (there should be .040-.050 gap between it and the clutch).

Clutch slippage can be caused by: oil/gease in the friction surface; weak springs, worn friction linings and/or worn balls or races behing the pressure plates.

Rebuilding the clutch is not too difficult and there have been several recent posts here on rebuilding the clutch. Two of them are below:

I have used the AGCO friction linings and the friction linings supplied by Chris/CT and Chris's friction linings are higher quality than AGCO's. Recommend new springs from AGCO (and new pinion seal) and after completing the rebuild, place the compled clutch in a shop press and force it open; you only need .010/.020" gap between the facings when the clutch is open; it is not uncommon to see 1/8" gap in a rebuild. File/mill the 3 ears holding the clutch discs together as necessary to reduce any excess gap.

I have rebuilt several of the clutches/actuators. PM me if you would be interested in rebuild services.

Great info!!  Is it just me or is there more projects than time to do them?  And is it because time is so short or our ego says "oh ya, we can do that, no problem"
