Finally getting back to working on my HD5B. Needing sleeves or cylinder kits. Where do you guys get them? Couldn't find them on Min Parr's site. Wanting to stay with the original figure 8 ports.

Detroit Diesel engine parts are their own, most if not all are upgraded numbers and designs where the OEM may be superseded not to be seen again. There is also a method of fitting these as they are machine fit to the block, just buying a set and slipping them in usually ends up with a sleeve separated at the air box ports and a ruined block. Do you have a DD71 series service manual, if not buy one. And when get to sleeve fitting do not try to do it with a brake or huckleburr hone, does not suffice.

Thanks Dmiller. I have an Allis service manual for the hole machine and the fella I bought it from is helping me put it together, and he has done more than a few Detroits.

The what seems like only a short time ago, walk into any truck shop of much size and everything was in stock. The question was OEM or after market.

Again longer than I want to admit, but with corporate buy outs and mergers what was left of Detroit Diesel was in Europe I think. But also some time ago USA military was smart enough they want some % of rolling stock none computer so a smart bomb would not stop everything from moving. And the universality of DD was a big part of none computer controlled engines. So a US company was at least trying to buy the tooling back and return parts manufacturing to the US.

I have been told 2-71 has a few little things that are different than the 3,4,6,8,and how ever big they built them. I am not smart enough to remember what they were though.

Any set for a inliine 71 series will work - I have a set from a 4-71 I rebuilt where guy had bought a 6-71 kit - the extra 2 I put into my 2-71 - HD5G

Just be sure you don't have oversize liners in engine as the liners come in oversize also .
The ports on the industrial sleeves look like 8 with 2 holes - the T set I used have a oval hole at a angle - like 2 U shaped slots at a angle .
Just be sure to set sleeve to proper distance above deck height so as to seal properly
aprox .005 proud . finding shims might be as problem - I used shims for a V8-71 but had to cut them down on OD
There a lot of aftermarket kits out there (or WAS in past) for the old inline 71 series engines - I found that DD was cheaper on many parts than places like NAPA for gasket kits also
