What oil should I be running in a B engine and the transmission with pto and pulley system integrated?

I'm sure you will get a lot of opinions on this. Here's mine.

If the engine has been recently overhauled and is "clean" inside, I would run any good multi-viscosity oil (10-30, 10-40, 15-40, etc.) If it's an old engine with all kinds of sludge and crap, I, personally, would try to run the same oil that had been run in it before, which was probably a straight weight, non-detergent oil.

For the transmission, I would use a hydraulic oil that meets the AC 821 Power Fluid specs.

I see for the transmission/hydraulic my manual says to use the same straight rate engine oil or any non-foaming oil.

So I'm wondering when I get the time to change mine should I switch to the hydraulic oil seeing it has some small leaks. or will the thinner hydraulic oil make it leak worse?

Just didn't know if thicker oil would be better when everything is old and wore out?

Engine wise mine has been rebuilt so I am going to use Petro Canada Duron HP 15W40.

It has a higher zinc level than Shell Rotella which will be good for the old valves and all the other values compare well to Rotella.

Not going to bother with synthetic in my CA as it won't be used in the winter or cold weather. My "other" orange tractor does winter duty.

If this isn't a good move, let me know. This is my first old and non-diesel tractor.

Your on the right track with motor oil............ original hydraulic was 20 wt because that's all they had in 1940... Today most people use Universal Tractor FLuid... it is a 20 wt hydraulic oil with a lot more addatives than the old straight 20 wt... and it will be common with most other tractors on the farm that have hydraulic systems / hydraulic wagons / hydraulic disc lift / etc. ..... 2o wt is common on the hydraulics. If you use a THICKER oil it may not lift into the pump suction, and it might have trouble priming in cold weather.

Or I have pails of synthetic Kubota Super UDT here. Is that ok for it?

YEP........ any good hydraulic oil about 20 wt viscosity is good... The UTF is just the CHEAPEST stuff.

Do you use the ISO 32 or ISO 46 blend ?

32 is more like 10wt oil .......... 46 is more like 20 wt oil ....... either is very high quality and good for the Allis B.

OK, thank you.

Maybe I will use the cheap stuff and flush it once or twice quick intervals to get it cleaned out so I know where I'm starting from.
