I have a 615 that has always had calcium chloride in the rear tires. There is a loud growling noise coming from the left rear axle.  Right now, my best guess it is coming from the final drive.  While I understand final drives can be noisy, the left side is noticeably louder than the right side.  If I remember correctly, the noise was louder in 1st gear wide open than 4th gear wide open.

Sorry, I am not giving everyone much to go on, but any idea what the noise may be?  I'll be tearing into it in a few weeks, and am looking for any suggestions to check.

Also, before the wheel weights and calcium goes back on/in, what else should I service.  Do the wheel bearings go bad?

I would guess it's a wheel bearing or differential support bearing.  Always check the gears for wear, bearings and pinion shafts.  Flush out the housing (if gunky) and put in new oil.  Hopefully, others will have better advice.

Dean- In the early 70's AC released a service bulletin on the rear final drive bearings on the 615 units.

PM me if you need a copy.
