I have accumulated a good size pile of Cast Tractor Parts from Motor Blocks to Final Drives and everything in between.

I have a Question.  Take a final drive. Is it worth breaking it down into its component parts and selling what is Cast and steel separately. My thought is I could tie up lots of labor for little financial gain. How would a yard classify a fully assembled Final Drive?
I talked to one scrapper who likes to bust up his bigger cast pieces to get a better price.   Don't want to go there now or ever.

You need to find out what the money numbers are for cast, steel and mixed. Let's say there's 20 cent difference between 'mixed' vs separate materials. OK... now you've got 100# of tractor part. There's ONLY a $20 diff if YOU sort the materials. So... IF you can separate them in less than an hour, you're 'making' $20 per hour BUT that doesn't include the time to box and load the separated materials.
One problem is that if not 100% cast, they'll ding you down to mixed status, so you lose that $20 ! Time wasted for nothing.
I don't bother stripping copper wire anymore, even though bare is better price, it's just not worth the time and effort.

Also, if there is any fluids in the parts you'll have to deal with that.

The word I get from the local scrapper is Cast in even smaller chunks will only bring Tin prices. Seems to be a industry change in scrap yard. Could bust it down to smaller but why, they will process it thru a shredder and cut it down anyway.

I save ALL of my broken castings to send to the foundry that does my castings for me. When I get a large order to pick up, I haul a load of scrap to them. They prefer it to be in smaller pieces (something that a person can lift by their self) and pay a better price than a scrap yard.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.

bringing it whole will bring bottom dollar here, bring something with oil or grease in it
and you'll haul it back home, or the disposal fee will amazingly be almost to the penny what the scrap is worth

We got some super nice people that live around my parts. They could tell I was never going to get around to hauling my 17 year collection of metal in, so they did it for me and didn't charge me a dime. Sure wish I could find out who it was, I'd like to buy them supper.
