1983 Ford F-150 300-6 new water pump a couple months back. It will heat up in 3 or 4 miles. Would a stuck thermostat let it heat that quick?

yes it could , then double check to make sure the temp sending unit is working right also - check the temp of coolant or pull thermostat and check in pan of water on the stove

Hey Thad,,like ole Coke says,,pull thermostat first,,,,I would reassemble TS housing and fill with water, restart and run engine to verify (new) water pump IS pumping water. I've had em stick closed as many times as stuck open.  Good luck,,!!

I was gonna gut the thermostat and put it back together and try it like you said. It’s stuck at work and I don’t have much for extra time at the moment. I can remove the t’stat At lunch today and give it a try.

Keep at least the washer body of a t-stat in the housing, the engine will still overheat if flows TOO Much water too fast as will not cool it. Also look at the Old T-stat, should have a bleed hole with or without a rivet in it to bleed air off the head, if blocked even as will open will never remove any buildup of steam or entrained air from the engine side of the stat. If you are gonna pull it anyway, just buy a new one and install it, too cheap NOT to.

I've seen thermostats accidentally installed upside down and cause overheating. Also have experienced a bad clutch fan causing overheating.

Are you sure you got the correct water pump the multi belt setup water pump turns clockwise and the serpentine belt pump turns the other way. I'd pull the thermostat first with out it you can look in the radiation and see the fluid circulating as soon as you start it.

My wife brought my trailer to my job site today. I hauled it home and will work on it tomorrow. I hope it’s the t’stat.

Can't help with the over heating other than others have said. Just want to say I've got a 1989 E-150 300-6 with a 5 speed stick. It was my go to work van and furnace service truck, part time business. Retired now, don't drive it much anymore.

Overheating in 3 - 4 miles definitely sounds like the thermostat is stuck closed or the new water pump decided to crap out, quality of replacement parts is not what it used to be. As suggested you can pull the thermostat and check for coolant flow or try to save a step and go ahead and replace the thermostat to start with.

From a cold start to boiling over in 3 or 4 miles, the thermostat is not the issue. A cracked head or leaking headgasket is far more likely.

Brian may have it right. a temp check, scanning the engine with a laser thermometer might tell, or this test kit can help:

If I didn't already have the laser thermometer, I would try the t-stat, first, then the coolant leak test...Wink

I was thinking the same thing. It usually takes quite a while for it to warm up and this happened fast. I’ll look at it Thursday.
