So I picked up a model b for restoration as a high school ag class project. One thing I am stumped on........it steers backwards! What is going on folks? Turn wheel right the wheels turn to left???

Thanks

C and B steering boxes steer opposite of each other . My guess is somebody replaced your B box with a C box , not knowing this .

Any chance it’s a C with a B front end? Sounds like it has a C steering gear box in it if it’s for sure a B.

How would I tell the difference?

I do see the gear box is not fully bolted up tight, so maybe there something to this idea.

The tractor serial number should include a letter for the model.

It might be that the B and C shop manual can help you identify the parts.

Pictures, pictures and more pictures. After 80 years and B C parts being interchangeable unless you know the slight differences in B and C parts it is hard to tell what you may have. The B steering box has a shorter out shaft with a constant spline. The C steering box has a longer out shaft that has a larger diameter spline that is not constant exact splines. They can bolt up tight to the torque tube because both the B and C uses the same torque tube. This is only one of many slight differences in parts that will interchange.

The Arm on a B box points down. A C arm points up. Makes the mismatch you describe by using a C box on a Arched Wishbone B Front axle used on All 1938 Bs.
Any B Gemmer or Ross box will correct the problem.

How Correct a 38 are wanting your Highschool project to be. I helped a friend do up a Early B like yours. #751.  I have a extra pair of the correct F&H Cast Iron front wheels for your early 38 B if yours don't have them.   Being the 816th B off the assembly line it came with 3 piece rear rims bolted to the wheel with 2 3/4 Bolts and 2 3/4 eccentrics. They may be long gone.
Correct rear tire size should be a 8-3 x 24.

By requesting a copy of a early B parts book as a guide for a accurate restoration would help you tremendously .  Your B should NOT have a metal seat back. It was wood padded and covered with canvas

OK, I'll bite. I had never heard of this issue. But I am trying to get my head around how it would feel to attempt to drive a tractor that has been set up like this!:) My guess is that eventually it might become OK in your brain that it responded back wards?? Kind of like getting off a Allis WD series with the hand clutch and getting on a John Deere with the opposite working hand clutch???
I Think you should find the correct steering box and add that to the list.
Yes we need tractor pictures of the project too.
 Regards,
 Chris

Looks like a B steering box from that angle. Could you take a picture showing the linkage from the front to the steering box including the front axle?

like Dick said........ look at the front end linkage.. Does this gear box have a long rod that connects under the radiator, or does it connect to the left front wheel king pin area ?

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

In the summer of '68 I worked as a helper millwright, during change over. Some of the fork trucks there steered backwards, to go right you turned the steering counter clockwise.

I will resize your pictures if needed so we can help figure out what is going on. A side picture of the tractor might be a help.
