Recruited a good refrigeration guy a couple of years ago to the laboratory division. Everybody at work knows about my tractors and they all make jokes about me working in the big city and owning all these Allis Chalmers tractors. This guy did the same for the past two years but within the past two months he has purchased 3 Allis Chalmers garden tractors and at 3 o'clock this afternoon he asks, "can I take off early today, I bought another garden tractor and I want to go pick it up?" Of course my response is, 'why are you still here?'

Thats what I liked about the union construction industry, especially when there was a lot of work, if you didn't like the boss or the work, you could quit and go to the hall and get a different another job. I did that more than once.

Employers and bosses need to learn that happy workers get more done and stay at the job longer.

I have all good guys, all very different personalities but very meticulous. One guy has been with me for 4 years now, was 30 minutes late for his interview. He came in, apologized for being late and explained his wife's car wouldn't start and she needed to get to work that morning. He said he finally figured out a relay was bad on the fuel system and swapped it with the horn relay so she could get to work. When he left the boss asked what I thought of his resume, I told him I didn't need to look at it, anybody that could figure out the electrical system on one of these newer vehicles that quick, I can teach to work on anything in our industry, hire him. He now does all my repairs and certifications on blood pressure machines and heart monitors among other stuff.
