Hi we have a 2001 gleaner with a 8.3 Cummins motor with caps file system. We have been out combining and it runs good until you put a full load on the motor and combine at regular speed then the rpm drops way down.. motor runs great but has been starting a little hard the past two days.. any help would be great our two local dealers have been no help. I changed the file filter and cleaned the fule in line screen but no help.. thanks so much ben

We have a Case IH 2388 with 8.3 cummins motor but with p pump. It was lacking power could only combine beans at 2.8 mph. Dad did something by plugging the waste gate on the turbo. Motor has all kinds of power now. Can run 4.5 mph. We also just got a Case IH MX 270 tractor with caps on the 8.3. Dealer had to replace the pump on it. We disked and there was no low end torque and fall on its face. Its just our luck buying newer equipment and having expensive repairs!

Our 1998 R52 with a Cummins did the same thing. Ran fine until under a load then rpms would drop until it died then it would start right back up. Dealer thought many parts of the fuel tank were coming apart plugging the supply lines but that wasn’t it (he said they sold one combine that did that). They also thought maby the fuel had an air lock somewhere which may have been part of the problem. I cleaned the little breather up in the bin but that didn’t help. It ended up being a fuel filter problem. A diesel mechanic put a inline sight glass in the fuel supply line and found that under a load it wasn’t getting enough fuel supply. We changed the filters 3 times and finally fixed the problem. Since then we’ve been running Baldwin fuel filters on it.

Are there any codes being displayed on the steering column LCD screen? If I recall there is an explanation for them in the back of the owners manual. If you have no codes then the CAPS pump is probably OK and I would look at the turbo waste gate and the waste gate actuator. If you determine the waste gate and actuator are working correctly then you'll probably need to have Cummins Service come out with their laptop. The CAPS fuel system was a band aid approach until they got the common rail fuel system perfected. Good Luck, Mike

Does it have a mechanical lift pump on the side of the block like the 8.3 with the P pumps? That code is a clue need to find what it refers to. The fact that it continues to display means its still active.

Good luck. When my 2001 R-62 was hurting for power it had an issue in the block that bolts to the top of the injection pump. Has two electric valves on it to control the fuel, one was stuck not allowing enough fuel to the pump (I think the fuel is under like 20,000 psi. in that block). Part had to be ordered and $2000.00 later we were going full tilt again.

You might do a fuel LIFT PUMP pressure check? The lift pump may not be supplying enough fuel to the CAPS? This may also explain why its harder starting at begin of day? Read this link. About the 3rd poster from top explains it better than me. Good luck. https://www.turbodieselregister.com/threads/8-3-isc-caps-injection-pump.87281/" rel="nofollow - https://www.turbodieselregister.com/threads/8-3-isc-caps-injection-pump.87281/ FYI- at the end of that link, problem ended up being boost loss at turbo.

Does it smoke real bad as it dogs down? If so you have a air restriction to the turbo, the rubber elbows & hoses can collapse under full load, as the temp. increases under the hoods or ambient temp. increases, the rubber gets softer. Check the air filters also.
