I have a 1961 Allis Chalmers H3 dozer with a 149 cubic inch gas engine.  I finished up with rebuilding the engine and need to get a new oil filter for it.  The one that was on it was a S-01 STP brand.  When I rebuilt the engine, it had a partially spun a crank bearing.  Since the oil filter is upside down, I'm wondering if there should be a check valve in it.  A check valve would prevent the oil from draining out when parked.  Hence, I wanted to double check this forum to see if anyone knows what the "right" oil filter brand/part number is for this engine.  I suspect that it should be the same as one for a D14 or D15.

I also need to replace the hydraulic filter too on it.  If anyone has a part number for this one, it would be greatly appreciated! Smile

Thanks for your help!

Pretty sure the oil filter should be right side up (threads towards the ground) like on the D14 and 15 tractors.  If the base has a small tube running up the middle, use a Fram C159 filter.

By the parts book this filter has a different base than the one that uses the C-159. It shows the AC filter number is/was 237000. The STP S-01 and the 237000 both cross to a Wix 51515. Wix also shows 51452 as another cross to the 237000. Both the 51515 and the 51452 have anti-drain back valves. The burst pressure and the dimensions are slightly different between the two filters. Ford and Chrysler are couple that used these filters.

Sounds as someone replaced the base probably off a later farm tractor as My 180 and others are upside down.

He has the right base by the book. The threads are internal in the filter element like most current spin-on filters. It threads down onto the post in the base. This is right side up for this base, upside down to look at, I guess one could say.

And the STP S-01 filter has an anti-drain back valve, by its specs.

Thanks everyone for your help!  It's good to know that oil filter that was on it wasn't the problem.

If anyone knows the hydraulic filter part number, I would would appreciate it!

You can find a parts catalog for your machine at https://www.minnpar.com/" rel="nofollow - https://www.minnpar.com/ so you can find part numbers. The parts catalog shows the filter is # 239930 (current AC number is 70239930). Some cross references are: Wix 51049, NAPA 1049, Baldwin B9, Fram PH11
