I have about a 1/2 acre pond.  A few blue gill have made it to maturity and hatch little ones all the time.

i think that i have no intermediate size blue gill cus the bass lunch up all the hatchlings.  I see the hathlings hugging the shore and hiding in  few rocks I have to stop erosion where the water runs in.

I am scheming on some type of protection to put in like maybe a wire cage.

No I am not gonna start throwing trees in there.  This is  decorator pond that borders the front lawn.

So anyone have any good ideas that i can use to get those little fry up to say an inch or two long?

Catch the bass and eat them. Restock them later after enough blue gills for sustainable life cycles.

Maybe a good idea Chas.  I am not a fisher person, but do eat the heck out of smoked bass.

Know some young uns and will look at getting them to yank some of the bass out of there for me.  They have done it in the past but seem to have more of an interest in the gals now.

Get some plants growing in the shallow areas, lilies, cattails, etc.  Then they have a place to hide.  You could also try fish food to maybe keep the bass thinking about that rather than the fry

john, What kinda food will bass take?

i am currently feeding floating fish food.

The channel cats love it and the blue gill hit it, but never seen a bass feed on anything i put in there.

Bass don't eat the floating catfish food much. They wait till the little ones come to it and eat them. Sink some dead weighed cedar trees for them to hide and live in. I sink them in mine for same purpose. They don't stick up above the water, can't see them, but I have a white stake at each sunken tree. HTH Tracy

To learn more about ponds and pond management I highly recommend Pond Boss as above. I talked to the guys at the link below a good amount at the last Pond Boss Conference, they have several options available. Thanks.

we took a length of 1- 1/4 inch PVC pipe and cut it to 15 inch lengths... layed a dozen of them together with one brick and banded them in a bundle.. throw into the lake and the little guys can hide INSIDE the pipes.. room of everybody... make  4 or 5 -  CHEAP.
