I am new to posting here, but have enjoyed reading the helpful forums. I have a 1948 Allis Chalmers C. I replaced the clutch disk and pressure plate as well as the bushing-i know i should probably having replaced throwout bearing too, but is is good n tight. The bushing was sanded to allow to spin as was very tight when first installed so it does spin and should not be binding. Fingers are adjusted to 1/4 inch from throwout bearing as indicated in books and online. The tractor cannot be put into gear when running as clutch does not appear to disengage. I can start in gear and tractor will hold still, but then cannot shift to other gears except first to reverse super fast as it quickly begins to rotate after out of gear even with clutch pedal still in. If everything is measured and at the proper settings can someone please tell me what I may be doing wrong?? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. |

To get the correct release of the pressure plate as well as free pedal the fingers need to be set at 1/8”. ------------- If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere. Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

An 1/8, ok I will gladly try it. Every where I had looked said 1/4. I appreciate the help and will try this tomorrow night as I won't be able to today. Thank you again! |

| I would guess you put the clutch plate in backwards. Seems to happen often with newbies to clutch replacement. |

| The clutch disk seemed to only fit one way, one side had a larger 'hub' I will say-so it would only fit with the larger side towards back of tractor. Does that sound correct? One side the hub was about an inch or more if i recall and yhe other side was about 1/2 that. If larger side hub was placed towards front the pressure plate could not be bolted back on as it stuck out way past bolt holes. Thoughts? |

| That sounds correct! They can be bolted in the wrong way though. When they are bolted in backwards the clutch plate is always under pressure on one side regardless of the position of the clutch pedal. |

I hope it is in correct-it honestly looked totally wrong when tryingvlarge side in. Everything lined back up nice , I can't say I want to split it again  Any other thoughts? Going to adjust fingers as told above, just don't get why it will hold in gear, but cannot be put in gear when running. |

| Disc in backwards...bent disc...1/4" is correct as far as the book states, but you might have to adjust the fingers a tad closer to the bearing, in order to reach them to let it disengage. Don't really know how many times the flywheel has been resurfaced, so...every time you resurface it, the fingers get further from the throw out bearing...a tad at a time! LOL! Rick |

I have 3 manuals including parts break down schematic, but absolutely appreciate the download manual and read clutch section in there. Confirmed it is installed correctly as the wording was better than any of my manuals. I hope nothing is bent as everything is brand new except the fly wheel. New starter ring installed last year on it and was good then, was not resurfaced, just cleaned and checked. I will adjust fingers to an 1/8 to compensate any other wear. Will post tomorrow night ig it works. Any other help is still appreciated and thank you for help so far. |

Well asjusted with no change. Clutch holds tractor if started in gear and when in gear if you depress the clutch it holds and stops. If tractor is taken out of gear or started out of gear the clutch does not dis-engage. I am concerned about adjusting any closer than an 1/8 as that doesn't leave much room. Any other thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you again. |

At this point there's nothing else to do, so just take it back apart and see what's going on. Bent disc or disc in backwards...Rick |
