had a funeral for a good friend and old co-worker. Chief of Police at Bennington NE. died from a massive stroke last week. the Department asked me to give the "last call" broadcast. I've done them before, but got teary eyed on this one. RIP Les...until we meet again.

Sorry for the lose of a good friend. I bet it was a HONOR for you to be asked/do it. I am sure that he was "looking down" on the event, and had a laugh or two! This is a memory that you will never regret.

Sorry for the loss of your friend. Like Joe M said - good friends are few and far between these days. Glad that you were honored to do the "last call" for him but sometimes it is hard to maintain your composure when doing something like that. Cherish the good memories that have been made over the years.

Thank you everyone! I've done "last calls" before, and not that they were any less important to me, this one really hit hard! all of the ones I've done were friends and co-workers. I felt really honored that the Bennington Police Department and my old work place in Omaha 911 called me to do this for Les. Les had helped me with a few shenanigans in the past and I've helped him in a few! he called me his "training Officer" when I would put his Officers in pursuits! lol. I was also able to get Les in a pursuit one night, he didn't recognize me and fell for it! he'll be greatly missed by all! and as always....any of ya'll out there still in Law enforcement and Fire/Rescue still be real careful out there!

I know the fire service ones I've been a part of listening to are TOUGH!! I can't imagine being the one to have to transmit the Last Call, especially if they knew and were friends with them, but.... I also can't think of a better honor than being asked to give that Last Call. We recently had a firefighter killed in a LODD accident, and one of our guys played the taps at the cemetery (which he'd done for several military funerals) and he said this one got the best of him, and he didn't know if he could do another one.

It's always a tragedy when we lose someone close. It's always been an honor to know them and their family. Losing ones possessions in a fire is bad enough, but when that same family loses a loved one......it'll tear your heart out. Worse is when you lose a co-worker. The stress of the job we do (did, I'm retired now) can certainly get to a person. It's probably what helped in the death of your friend. He was way too young and sounds like he will be missed by all that knew him. The foot print we leave on other's hearts is what makes us beloved to them and remembered by all.
