Greetings all,
I have a question about my Haybine. I have a New Holland 1499 Self-Propelled 12 foot haybine. I have two problems that I can't seem to solve.
1. The ends of the sickle area plug with hay often, causing a bunch to get caught under the sickle, riding over the hay, making a mess. I have guards and sickle sections all the way to the end, and the reel has all the tines, and is properly adjusted. But the reel is not clearing the hay from the ends into the rolls. I have never experienced this with our Hesston 1160. I think it is because the reel on the 1160 is "inline" to the sickle, where the 1499 has two opposing 4 bar reels that are on an eccentric to bring hay into the sickle and rolls.
2. The second problem I am experiencing is that the 1499 can not go over previously mowed hay without getting it balled up under the skid shoes or the guards. This always happens to me when I have a sliver of hay left to mow that is too narrow . I have to put the head down over previously mowed hay, and it will start to cut the narrow strip, but as soon as the ball forms under the head, the narrow strip of hay left to mow will start to get laid over and not cut. Again, the 1160 we have does not have this problem. I can mow anything with that.
Eventually, I would like get a discbine, but until then, these are the tools I have, and can use. The 1499 is my mower of choice, because I can out mow the pull behind Hesston, and get more hay down more quickly.

I have not ran the 12' so I'm only comparing to the 9' machines. I had problems on both ends as well, solution was to pull knife and make sure table is adjusted flat so you don't bow the cutter. I used a 3-4' pc of flat steel same dimensions as the bar. I ended up putting all new NH guards on due to poor quality after market sets not having support on the back side of the knife.
For cutting over a row, I always gear down, cut into the row with far side and lift the machine so the head just skims the surface With reel speed set wide open.
You have tried all this, just passing what has worked for me.

John, I always have double ended sections on both ends of my sickle.

I never had a self propeled unit but the stub guards always worked great for me. Had them on Hesston,s and got a newer 488 nh with them now. The stub guards won't keep up with the discbine but give it time and there is less plugging than regular guards. I also have 7 pointed rock to deal with and have little trouble with these .

Double section blade on the end also speed the real up when you go back into previously cut hay the reals not picking it up before you try to push through it

As said stub gaurds will help, but your gaurds and sections might be worn out. Also the hold downs could be worn to and not keeping the sickle down to the gaurds. I had a 2450 NH with 2300 series head, replaced the gaurds and put new sickle in a gained an acre an hour. I run 4.5 to 6.5 mph with my self propelled and sickle head

I have a NH 495 Haybine which is the same as yours only a pull type. The reel on these mowers are a whole different breed from others. It's almost like you can't set the reel close enough or low enough to the cutterbar for it to sweep the hay towards the rolls in a nice even flow. In thinner stands mine will build up cut hay right behind the sickle and then take it to the rolls in bunches. When I got this about 12 years ago I got all new guards,hold downs and sickle all genuine NH and it rarely plugs. Do you have the piece of rubber at the outer end of cutterbar? If not that can cause plugging there. As far as plugging going over hay already cut mine will do that some even when going real slow cutting a narrow strip finishing a field. I've also got an old IH 990 MoCo that I totally rebuilt last tear with ALL new new cutterbar parts that are genuine CaseIh and it plugs far worse than the NH going over hay already cut even with the reel barley clearing the guards. Seems like on the NH the guards are slightly angled down and the IH are not.
