Ok I have the opportunity to pick up a series 4 diesel 17 with three point hitch with a bad motor (ventilated block and two or three piece crank ) I have access to a 433 and a 301 both from combines here's my ? A 17 is rated a 1650 rpms all the 433 in 6000 series are rated at 2300 is 1650 going to be below the torque curve or would a 301 work better if I do use a 433 I will get ed to set it to 6060 specks

both require mods. the 301 is too long so you have to address frame, power steering possibly front axle,etc.
the 433 is probably a better choice

I'd think the 200 cid 4 cyl is such a gutsy engine, that you will have lots more torque than the old 262 NA diesel had. The pump could be re-configured for the lower rpms, or just leave it as is and enjoy the faster speeds all around lol! The only catch would be if you had something that needed pto speed to be right on 540, and had enough load to require 70 hp, might be a little issue, but still just throttling it back to the desired rpm should work ok. Most 540 pto equipment aren't loading the engine that hard constantly.

Either engine will easily out perform the non-turbo D-262, so don't worry about the RPM difference. My main fabrication issue is the fact that the power steering cylinder is too large in diameter to slide in alongside the newer engine. Raising the front support up six inches wouldn't be my way of getting it done. I'm thinking of removing the factory steering ram and engineering a hydraulic cylinder across and underneath the tie rods like the newer 170/175 tractors to keep the front end height and sheet metal somewhat correct.

Dr that's close to what I was thinking too use the 433 ditch the power steering put a steering head under the dash use a one peice tie rod with a cylinder like the 6080 slide the radiator back in the shroud to get the fan closer yes Ed you will get to work your magic on the pump but I want to leave higher speed set up 2800 it would be nice to go down the road and not get passed buy the little old lady on the scooter

I was thinking there might be enough room to just delete the D-17 steering cylinder but still get the steering shaft to connect to the front support ??? If so, connect the old steer cylinder lines to the new crossways steer cylinder. It would still be power-assist steering just like it was before. An orbitrol wouldn't fit under the gas tank, but could be alongside the torque housing at an angle ??

My neighbor did the 433I in a series 1 D17. The factory power steering cyl had to go. Either retrofitting a hydrostatic steering system like Doc says or a CharLynn mounted like on a WD.
