I got a 5040 the other day and I'm trying to figure out how to use it I ordered the operators manual but it isnt here yet. I've been searching for days and cant find any info info on how to shift this thing! Any insight out there? |

Push the clutch down and select the gear if its the 6 speed you have two sets of gear patterns,you need to center the shifter in neutral to go from one range to the other.I'd guess you never drove an Oliver or Cockshutt tractor?

It moves back and forth just like the pattern a little tricky at first but easy once you get used to it. Once bought a Case 400 from a fellow that had owned the tractor for 10 years told me it was a great tractor but it was just geared way too high.When I went to load it I shifted it down into the low side he'd never been able to find that set of gears.

Like Gary says, it can be a bit tricky to get it into gear at first......but it gets easier to do the more you use it. No pushing down is req'd, but I found that the lever needs to be firmly held over to the left when selecting those gears (R1/1st or R2/4th IIRC) in either range. The mechanism is a bit sloppy. Better QC or a "template" higher up on the shift lever would have helped. |

Ted, Nothing readily apparent for a fix. I'd thought about making that "template" mentioned above to force the shifting lever into the correct positions, but never got around to it. (It's been sold) The PTO engage lever was also a bit sloppy; I made a stop for it. The PTO clutch (2nd stage) always seemed to drag and it was difficult to engage without some clashing of gear teeth. All in all, the 5040 was a very stout tractor and the Power Steering was excellent even with a loader. BTW, if anyone is thinking of putting a block heater in a 5040, I have the part number and source for it. |

| Is there a good source for steering parts for the 5040? I found 2 websites that sell lots of parts for it, but I cant tine the ball joint at the end of they hydraulic cylinder part on the left side of the tractor. Mine is loose as can be, and I'd like to replace it |

Import Tractor is a very good source for parts also ebay has lots of parts.Its about the same tractor as the Long 445 and Oliver 1265 many parts will interchange between those tractors |

The Long tractors may share this same part/assembly. I've read where Oliver 550s use the same thing. IDK
