So I started out this morning with plans to replace the rivets, and springs on the snap coupler latches.  First thing I managed to do was break off a rivet while removing a spring.
I thought maybe I could drill out the stub, but they are harder than the surrounding cast, so will be  difficult to drill without making a mess of it.  Other option would be to try to press them out the back, but casting is very irregular, and hard to support properly in the press.
I'm sure others have been in this pickle.  Any suggestions?

Can you grind the head off and drive the rivit out with a punch?

If the other side is open, clean it with a slightly smaller drill bit, then use a pin punch to drive the rivet out.

So far I have tried drilling, and pounding.  The last thing I did was to heat it up with a torch, and then pour water over it .  Well rusted in place. Head is gone.  I left it to cool off and will get back to it in the morning.  Seemed to lose its temper with the heat, as I could get a good divot in it with the  center punch after several cycles of hot and cold, but not earlier.
Will attack with the drill in morning.  Hoping that does the trick.  The other side has a rivet in it as well so the fight continues Geek
