Got one B home. It's a 1939. It's missing one of the studs for the finals. Can I put a bolt in for now, and if so how long? Also my other B has an oil line going to the governor. This one does not just has a plug. The oil line does not have any place to put a line. That's not to say it wasn't changed. If this is correct how about lubing the governor. Good news is I do have spark! More questions to come as I discover what I have.

Don't know about the final, but my 1939 B has an oil line to the governor.

The older B's did not have an oil line going to the governor housing. The final drive has studs to hold them to the transmission case. If you use a bolt it should be about 3/4" longer that the thickness of the final drive flange with the hole. There is nothing real close to rub on the bolt if it went in a bit farther than the thickness of the transmission case.

Dick, my 38 B with a BE5529 back of block stamped, and AM22916-10 block casting # engine does not have a oil line to the governor housing. Just how is the mechanisms inside lubricated on these engines. Do I need to do some required or recommended maintenance here?

The return oil that goes thru the oil filter drains free fall over the top of the lifters. It then flows to the front of the engine and spills out over the timing gears. The governor gear that drives the magneto is running in fresh oil that is on the timing gear. The oil on the gear teeth seeps down the back side and lubed the gear bearing. This much the way the top gear in the final drive gets lubed from the pan under the bull gear. I have changed governor housings on some and added the tee and oil line from a scrap tractor but have never found a dry governor gear and bearing on one that didn't have the line.
In saying that my knowledge of non dry bearings is limited to around 10 of these little tractors without an oil line.

Dick, thank you for that info, it makes me feel better to know what is happening in my tractor. I'm sure mdm1 feels a little relief too.

thanks for the info Dick. I did find in the AGCO parts book that the older engines did not have the oil line. But I am glad you explained it for us. I will be back with more questions I think.

Are the studs the same thread going into the finals? Anyone have a pic of a stud or better yet have one they would sell?

I think they are. The end that goes into the transmission has a shorter thread area so they can be bottomed out. I am sure I have some laying around. the shed is such a mess that I can't use my walker in there so I don't go in far often. I very seldom throw anything away but also don't organize old parts either. I have to put a new radiator on my C today so I will be digging around some. I had a new radiator still having banding around the box that I dug out last evening without falling.
