I had an old D-17 gas that did that one time. Connecting rod broke right in the beam. When I tore it down, I looked at the other three rods and I could see where they ( at one time) were clamped in a vise, leaving some serious bite marks in the rod beams. That is why the one rod broke. I was always taught to never ever clamp a conn rod in a vise. Always wrap a thick rag around the rod and just snug up the vise.

Dumb question possibly, but how long could an engine run with a hole like that, seconds, minutes? Would an operator hear the "BANG" from inside the cab? I only ask because I have not been around/on a tractor-combine that suffered this. Sorry for the owner of this particular machine though.

Could depend on which rod. Front rods, die when it happened because it almost always breaks the cam. Back rods could run on front cylinders until it run out of oil or something else gave up. No they don't make a lot of noise. MACK

I saw one that the pin bushings worked loose in the rod and the pounding broke the piston in half and then the rod flailed around and did what the one in the picture did...
