any opinions about welding the larger PTO sleeve on my smaller shaft? I tried the thin slip-on sleeve but the holes didnt align correctly and the bolt i used wasnt very thick so the brush hog shaft pulled the sleeve off and whipped around and busted the u-joint. i bought the extended sleeve that fits over the smaller PTO shaft and then allows the larger brush hog to fit. once again the holes dont align so I wondered if I could just weld the coupler to the smaller PTO shaft since I dont intend to ever remove it. I lso understand i can get the larger shaft installed in my housing.

If you have a B you need an overrunning clutch. You can get them with the small spline size on the tractor side and the larger sixe fir the driveshaft end- problem solved!

ill second what leon says except depending on your mower and driveline you may have to add the SAE hitch as the pto will be too long with the added length of the overrunning coupler. I have one and ran into that issue.
I believe you need the rear plate/carrier off a CA to run the bigger shaft as its different than the early b/c because of the bearing. But then running an overrunning coupler still extends the pto.

Yep, ORC is the way to go. I use one on both of my tractors with transmission-driven PTO, and they are life savers.

You know you can get the 11/8th in yoke for the end of the pto shaft.i still have one hanging in the barn of a real one rotary plow

The laster B's had 1-3/8 PTO shafts, maybe you could find one in a salvage yard or order new. You will still need ORC

We tried the sleeve enlargers a lot. Depended on the load. If it was a heavy load - rotary mower, baler - the sleeve would split. If that was the case we always put on a new PTO with the 1 3/8" PTO. Course that was in the 40's and 50's.
Check on e-bay. I have usually found one there.
I fully agree with the overrunning clutch - especially with a rotary mower or other heavy pto implement. Otherwise they will "push" you through a fence.

I used an adapter for years on the 8N Ferd and never had a problem, except the little bolt got beat up pretty bad after years of bush hoggin.
I would either get a yoke for the mower that fits the tractor, or get a new style PTO shaft for the tractor if I was doing it on a B. AND make sure you check the length of PTO shaft when adding an overunning clutch. Make sure it will collapse far enough with the added length of the adapter.

I just got off e-bay and found a B-C PTO for sale - Allis Chalmers B belt pulley PTO search. Looks like it has a 1 3/8 shaft on it. However, I did not take the time to confirm it. You could call the seller to confirm. If this is a 1 3/8" it would definitely be the best way.
Looks like somewhere around $ 168 plus shipping if interested.
